Tell-Tale removal??

I just installed a water pressuer guage on my 1985, 50 hp Johnson. Looking at the instructions, I decided that the tee fitting would not allow as accurate a reading as I wanted. So I plumbed the guage to the tell-tale hose directly. (My Question)--- Does this restrict or change the flow of water through my motor. It never occured to me that the tell-tale might be a circulation device! Should I get back into it and put in the tee fitting. I can't see the pee stream from the helm so that isn't an issue. Thanx, Bob

Tarpon Bob, plumbing a water pressure gauge directly to the pee hole doesn't change the water flow. A pressure gauge is the only way to go . Your observations about the being unable to see the pee drain is well known. Kinda like getting a crank with your new car. The water pressure in your engine will be slightly greater due to the lack of the pee hole. That's good. nevjb

I respectfully disagree with your plan to do away with the telltale. Its location provides an air escape for the water jackets and will prevent any pockets of air from dampering cooling effect. You can still incorporate the Tee idea and if you are now running with a good know waterpump, use whatever pressure your guage reads as your baseline to montitor the health of the cooling system. That's my 2 cents.

Tarpon Bob, ob does raise a good question. I would be interested in your installation of these gauges and seeing if the temp gauge shows signs of extreme fluctuation. This would indicate air pockets in the block. Also pulling off the fitting where it fastens on the peehole to see if any large or small amount of water come out or the sound of air being passed in or out. Most of the blocks I've worked on do not seem to have any problem with this setup, but after all these years, I'm still learning. ob could be right. Admirals are pretty smart nevjb
