Here in Northeast Ohio we're gifted with Lake Erie and quite a few inland lakes.. My personal lake of choice is Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir at West Branch State Park. A watercraft officer was nice enough to point out that the state just installed new $3 million launch ramps at the camp ground area. Told us not many people knew about them yet.

It's been AWESOME for the past 2 months... and only 20 minutes from home!

Sounds nice enough, which makes me wonder what you think when you hear Chrissie Hynde's warbling lyrics?: " A, O, OH WAY TO GO OHIO"

Sharks?

I tried kayaking at Crystal Cove just North of Laguna Beach once, post-JAWS days. I never could shake being freaked out about what hungry animals might be swimming beneath me waiting for me to take a spill.

I'm from Hawaii originally, so I don't even think about it. Statistically, you're far more likely to die in a traffic accident while towing the boat to the ramp than from a shark attack.

I do try to avoid murky water though, especially around dawn and dusk.

Re: Tell us about where you boat!

I'm down in S. Florida.

I get to boat in Biscane Bay, S Beach area, The Upper Keys, Ft. Lauderdale a when I want to trailer a bit farther at least once or twice a year I head to the Lower Keys and the West Coast to Ft Myers, Sanibel Etc.

I love the flexibility that I have, which is the reason why I could never see myself not having my boat on the side of my house and not being able to trailer in the spur of the moment. On any given moment I can trailer withing about two hours and be in any number of the most desirable boating areas around. As far as ramps, there are many all around, never an issue but you have to be smart when you go. You just can't show up at 9AM on Sunday to launch and expect to boat in Biscayne Bay. Just not happening. I guess that's the way it is in most places.

We are from Northern California,

We like Jackson meadows reservoir and Eagle Lake in the summer and Lake Berryessa and the SF Bay and Delta during the winter. Most of the time we spend a weekend boating. If we are gone for more time, it's camping and riding.

Re: Tell us about where you boat!

Home base for me is pretty much everywhere in the picure. :D

The Chesapeake Bay is about 200 miles long, from the Susquehanna River in the north to the Atlantic Ocean in the south. At its narrowest point between Kent County's Plum Point (near Newtown) and the Harford County shore near Romney Creek, the Bay is 2.8 miles wide; at its widest point, just south of the mouth of the Potomac River, it is 30 miles wide.
Total shoreline for the Bay and its tributaries is 11,684 miles, and the surface area of the bay and its major tributaries is 4,479 square miles. Depth of the bay is 46 feet and maximum depth of bay is 208 feet.

The word Chesepiooc is an Algonquian word referring to a village "at a big river." It is the seventh oldest surviving English place-name in the U.S., first applied as "Chesepiook" by explorers heading north from the Roanoke Colony into a Chesapeake tributary in 1585 or 1586. In contrast with many similar bodies of water, such as Delaware Bay or San Francisco Bay, the Chesapeake Bay is almost always preceded by the article "the" in usage.

Re: Tell us about where you boat!

I mainly boat in the Alafia River and Tampa Bay. Having only an 18' boat, I'm limited to the gulf. The river has two ramps, one with two lanes, and the other with four lanes. There is a small island in the river, and we go there when the weather is rough, or if I just repaired the boat, that way there isn't too far to get towed if we break down.

Tampa Bay is nice, if you know where to go, some spots are only two to three feet deep. There is one main island there, Beer Can Island (aka Party Island, Shell Island, etc). The east side has a cove, with deep water (20'), and the other sides are pretty shallow there. It is not very big, but there is room for a couple hundred boats. Good crowd there, with the exception of the idiots that leave all their trash up there.

My favorite place to go is Egmont Key, just south of the Skyway Bridge. It is the border of the bay and the gulf. The west side has crystal clear water, and the east side is a little darker. Shipping channels surround the island, so the water is really deep around there. There are some old forts from the Seminole War, and lots to do up there. It is a state park, and no pets allowed or overnight camping, but definitely worth the trip. They have many sights to see there.

I Boat at L.B.L (Land Between the Lakes) only 25mi away and is Home for me, no more traveling hours any more. We Backwoods camp there too or just go for the day to just get out and enjoy the day. A very family orientated place, So much to do ON or OFF the water. 1000mi of shoreline to enjoy also.

Judging by the movie, LBL looks like a nice retreat! From your photos it looks much like where I live.

Re: Tell us about where you boat!

I'm 5 minutes for one of three free public one-boat ramps at Banner Marsh State Fish & Wildlife Area (central illinois) a 4,363-acre freshwater marsh. It carries a 25hp limit which appeals mainly to fishermen and canoeing. The weekends you might have 10-15 boats out at one of the accesses. Several times during the week just me fishing alone with not a sign of another boat. On slow weekdays the ranger will put his boat in and do some fishing with me. Talk about the prefect job.

Lake Shawnee, in Topeka, Kansas.

My lake of choice is tiny compared to most of yours, but it's in town and convenient to get to. There are two other much larger lakes (Perry and Clinton) near by also that I sometimes go to if Lake Shawnee is closed for some reason. There are ski and rowing competitions and triathlons and such that they close the lake for from time to time.

Norfork Lake just outside of Mountain Home Arkansas. 40 miles long, 550 miles of shoreline, and it's a Corps of Engineers lake so no houses right on the lake, and plenty of well maintained ramps and campgrounds. Has excellent fishing, and is a pretty popular scuba destination.
