Hey all, I just wanted to know where the location of the telltale is supposed to be on my 77 johnson 70HP, I noticed it pumping out of the side mount holding right above the lower unit, and then out of a hole a light hugher than the opposite side of the prop.

Why dont they let it come out by the powerhead so you can troubleshoot the impeller while docked like mercury's?

The only reason i ask this is because i saw a similar motor model on ebay and the picture looked like it had a telltale by the powerhead.

Re: Telltale location?

you dont have one. omc didnt start to use PEE HOLES untill the 78 model year.

you can do 1 of two things to make one:

by the exhaust cover from the same HP motor, but the 1978 model year

or

take yours off, drill it out, and tap it for a plastic 90 degree eldow fitting

Re: Telltale location?

ddbyrd3 a telltale is a small strong stream of water that pumps out when the motor is running. The water usually comes from just under the motor cowling (hood) in the rear so it sprays directly into the water.

Bob

So here is another STUPID question:

If you have a weak Telltale, it is time to replace the water pump impeller????

Re: Telltale location?

ddbyrd3 - In most cases, definitly. I have also seen weak flow due to restrictions in the tubing (bugs, crap getting sucked up...etc)

Re: Telltale location?

You will want to place the fitting high on the plate. This will help keep the water system full. Standard hole is a 1/8th pipe thread. You can get a brass fitting at the auto store or get the plastic one at the John/Rude dealer.
