For the 85hp engines, there is another item to factor in. The black overheat detectors were coming on at too low at temperature. Force replaced that part with an orange unit. It is set to go off at 180 degrees.

I suggest you buy a cheap laser thermometer from Harbor Freight. They cost about $22. You can have someone aim it at the head while you are running to get an actual reading of what head temp is.

Re: Telltale or gauge?

well I put a gauge on the top of the head and fired up the motor - no pressure at all - gauge didn't move. I pulled gauge with engine running and water was coming out, but had no pressure. Motor is freshly rebuilt so I am pretty sure its not plugged. I guess it must be my pump?

How did you have the water hooked up. Were you using a garden hose with muffs? If so I would try dropping the motor in a container of water or testing out on the water before changing the impeller.

Yeah - I used muffs and a garden hose - just thinking that city water pressure should be able to push it thru without pump even turning, correct?

Two problems with garden hose and mickey mouse ears are, not enough water pressure and alignment or sealing of the ears on the lower unit. If you've not had a problem with overheating, I would try it out on the water before changing the impeller.

There is a possibility that you may have to allow the thermostat to open before you get a reading on your gauge.

But my gauge is located before the thermostat? I took the foot off again last night - going to try and hook my garden hose up to water pump tube and see if get any more pressure thru the head. If I get good pressure thru the motor I think it will be safe to say it is my pump. Is there any way the pump would not spin - key was there.

Re: Telltale or gauge?

I looked at the diagram that I have for water flow and it appears that you are correct. The fitting is before that thermostat so you shouldn't have to wait for it to open. If you've already got the lower end off then I guess it would not hurt to replace the impeller. If the key was in place then the impeller is probably turning. Just want to stress that testing with the garden hose is not a good way to check for water pressure. Install the new impeller and take it out on the lake and make a note of pressure at idle and WOT for future reference.

Yeah - problem with that is the impeller in it now is brand new? Thats why I am thinking it may be something else. Had the bottom end completely apart and now blockages, powerhead was completely re-built so should be no blockages there either. It really has me stumped:confused:

Re: Telltale or gauge?

I meant to do this a few days ago. The previous owner installed a tee so the motor would have a temp gauge, pressure gauge and a telltale (which was never hooked up). I can't imagine running an engine without the two.

Yes I agree with you. Having temp. and pressure gauges is like getting color TV. Once you get it, you don't want to go without it.
