Temp Gauge and Sensor

Lost indication on my temp gauge right at the end of last season. Engine is a VP AQ231A. In the process of doing some maintenance this winter on her. How often do the temp sensors fail on the block? Can I use a GM sensor instead of a VP one?

Marine sensors are seldom the same as whats used in a car. The sensor has to match the gauge

there is temperature sensors available for pretty cheap #12...
if your engine is stock than the above drawing should help i hope.
