sounds like you have a short in the wire or the guage is bad

You may not be getting a good connection or ground.

I pulled my voltmeter out and taped the connections together. The temp gauge pegged when the key was turned on. Reconnected the voltmeter and the temp gauge returned to normal. The reason for pulling the voltmeter out was its housing broke and I need to return it to Faria for a replacement. Reconsidered and decided to do so in the off season.

When was the last time the impleller was replaced or checked?

In the future, you really should start a new thread with a different question. The title is temp gauge pegs. People with knowledge about alternators may not know about your new question.

Take your alternator to your local starter/alternator shop. They can usually fix them a LOT cheaper than any replacement.

You know what they say about assumptions, but... he did say "when power is applied". Exactly the same as what I experienced. Just another thing to check.

those old aq130c also have a raw water filter that tend to be a problem at times.
I was about to mention that but I see it was electrical and not temp related.
