I just replaced the stats and water pump on an '88 90hp.

I want to add a temp gauge, but I don't know where to put the sender. Is there a Tempo (or similar) gauge/sender combo available for J/E OB's?

Also, what is the normal range of operating temps, and how hot is too hot?

Thanks,

-John

Check West Marine's web site. They carry them. They may carry them here too, I've never looked. You can get a kit made for outboards.

OK - I'll look for the part.

I'm still not sure where the sender would go. Is there a pipe plug in a water jacket somewhere?

You can do a temp gauge, and it's a good idea. But generally it tells you it's too hot (over 163 degrees ).
A water pressure gauge may be a better idea,as you can monitor the waterpump output, and know when to replace it.

DHP

Guess that's actually waterpump input.

DHP

Re: Temp gauge/sender for 90hp

Thanks DHPMARINE, but I'm confused now.

Is a water temp gauge not a good way to monitor engine temps? The manual talks about thermomelt sticks and digital pyrometers to check for proper temperature.

I've always had Mercruiser drives and American V8's (yeah, I know, car engine in a boat), so this OB is really leaving me scratching my head.

I am being converted quickly, though. I really like this engine.

So, does a water pressure gauge make more sense for an OB? Or, is it a waste of money since there is the tell-tale? How do you know if it is running hot, other than the alarm?

An after market temp guage mounts on the head and is fastened by one of the heade bolts.

The temp gauge consists of a "L" bracket that is retained by one of the head bolts. The other end of the "L" bracket has a threaded hole that a brass temperture gauge screws into, the end of which should rest .010 from the cylinder head surface.

If you cannot locate one (the two items) here at "iboats", I have a couple left in my remaining stock. Email at my address below but inquire here at "iboats" first.

Thanks Joe,

That is what I needed. I already purchased the sender and I can fab the bracket easy enough.

I am getting the impression that temp gauges are not common. I wonder if I need to bother.

Getting the warning buzzer working is my next step.
