Re: Temp gauge wiring question please!

You did get a new sensor with the gauge, right? The one temp sensor that came with the engine won't operate a gauge...it's a digital signal, either on (overtemp) or off (not over temp).

To answer your specific question, if your new sensor just has the one wire, then it's grounded to the engine block. If you use a separate battery, connect the battery negative post to the engine block to complete the circuit.

Curious about why you added a battery just for this device, if you don't mind my asking.

Re: Temp gauge wiring question please!

Thanks jtexas for info, yes I did get sensor with gauge, you take out one bolt put sensor against head type, I thought that a seperate battery was the way to go to keep main battery for starting only? so probably to keep it simple I would be better to just use main battery for my gauges, I have speedo, cylinder head temp, and water pressure, the water temp is only one with wire to engine, they will all have the lights working on them with switch. thanks again for help, JBD

Gauges, nav lights, depthfinder, horn, bilge pump...cranking batteries handle most accessories no problem and the engine keeps it charged.

If you spend a lot of time anchored with the stereo playing, or livewell pumps running, or electric trolling motor, or overnight with lights on...that sort of thing you'll want to start thinking about a separate deep-cycle battery.
