Hi,

I'm wondering if this is normal....
During the ny heat wave which was 100 degrees on saturday, I drove my boat at top speed for 1/2 hour and then entered a NO WAKE ZONE 5mph for another 1/2 hour. By the time I got out of the 5mph zone, I noticed that the temp was just a hair shy of the RED ZONE. As soon as I increased my speed (25-30 ) the needle started back down to normal.

Question: Should the temp gauge go up that high at 5 mph traving for a 1/2 hour??

Thanks in advance,
Lou

What type of motor do you have? V-8 should be around 160 not very much hotter (180 running hard). Any thing near red line means near broken.

Stu, when water pump impellers get weak, they show up at low rpm's first...JUST LIKE YOURS...time for some maintenance, specifically a new pump...

Hi ODDD1,

I just had a new pump put in 4 months ago.
Since then, I hit 9 sand bars and drove in 1.6 feet of water for an hour. Would that screw it up...or is this a stupid question?

Thanks,
Lou

yea, sucking up a bunch of sand and dirt would most assuredly damage a rubber pump impeller..

so would that require the replacement of the water pump or the impeller?

Here is how I look at it:
(alpha Gen II)
cost of new impeller: $13
cost of new water pump: $80
cost of new engine when warped, grooved old water pump housing doesn't pump enought water and toasts engine: $5000 (add in the cost of a new pump also)

Hello
ohhh I love that one Bomar. I tell all my customers that. the price of the pump and tstats is the same whether you buy pistons with it or not.the advice given is right on
time for more maintenance. do the whole kit. the money you save on just an impeller is not worth it. good luck and keep posting :)
you may also wish to run the engine with the block drains out for a bit while on a flusher to flush sand from the block.

It always amazes me how some people will try every way possible to save a few dollars and in the process risk several thousand $.
I just shake my head sometimes.
Thank you both for your kind comments.....often my logic is not appreciated.

Depending on the age of the, I guess, I/O, there were to TSB's on some of the late 1988-9 350's that were prone to just such a scenario. Take a look at the following link. There is a retrofit kit for this situation.

In my opinion, all other posted advise is right on the mark. If you have any doubt about an impeller, replace it, better yet, learn how to replace it yourself, you will be more likely to change it on or before scheduled maintainance depending on how and where you use your boat.

I hope this helps!!!

http://www.bravodrives.com/bulletins_main.html
