Temp. raises in idle

Had her out yesterday for the first time this season and she runs great, when I run her normal speed, about 30mph at 3000rpms temp stays steady at 150, but when I am in a now wake zone for a long period of time she raises up to 200, I would think that at idle speed she would stay cool unless the engine is hot and not getting the right water flow, I haven't checked the water intake vents on the stern drive yet.

water doesnt circulate as fast at idle. idling for periods of time can cause temp to raise, especially if it's a rather warm day. only hitting 200 degrees is fine. not near hot enough to do damage.

have you checked your impeller... prob time for a new one.

I do belive its time to put a new one on, I was just hoping to do it in the off season, thats when I do all my maintainance on her to get it ready for the next season, as soon as I get out of the wake zone and give her some throttle she goes right back down to 150 again, and yes the water temp. here in KY. is 82 Deg. only happens when I go for long periods of time at cruising speed of 30mph (1/2 throttle) and the pull in to marine at no wake zone. You think she'll be ok for this season?

I had the same exact problem the first time out this season, I pulled the lower off and everything looked fine. Then I removed the lower pump housing and found where it had burnished a little bit. New housing's upper and lower with a new impellar and it stays right at 150 during long idle sessions.

I wouldn't chance just for the fact that mine got worse quick it hit over two hundred after a couple min of idling. Kind of a hassle if your linline to load or anything else.

Big Del has a point. normally, 200 degrees after idling for awhile isn't bad, unless it starts going above that more and more. in alot of autos, a rise in temp on hot days while stuck in traffic is normal, but cars don't have an impeller like boats. as i'm sure you know, it doesn't take much to change one out, just to be sure.

200 not horrible but over that i would ba a little leery. my mech said $200.00 for install and parts probably takes him a half hour or so, or do it yourself for fifty on a rainy day. i have read the manual, seems not to bad to do yourself .take pictures and take your time .outdrive stays on boat just lower half comes off.

I apreciate all the advice guys!! I had all the schematics for the boat and upper and lower unit the guys sent me here, since then my laptop has power probs. and I am not able to retreive, I was going to ask if they could send me the link that they gave me before, I have a SELOC book that I could use to start my camp fires, The link they sent me was awsome, Had every thing I needed to work and maintaine my boat myself!! Well thanks again, I am taking her back out tomarrow, I put on a new slave solenoid and fixed wire to the electric fuel pump so she is good to go.

No you didn't miss anything I put her in Thurs. and those were the other two probs that I fixed while on the lake, I always bring a wire tester with, I put her in the water and went to start her and CLICK, Fuel pump was working fine so I checked the solenoid while wife turn the key and me with wire tester and it was the solenoid, so I took of one lead and basically hot wired her, she started right up, so any time I started her thurs. I would just touch the connection and get going. Then while in idle she just quit out of no where, so I pulled the cover again and told wife to JUST turn the key to ON and no fuel pump, Humm? so I put the tester on the POS+ wire and nothing, so I traced the wire from the fuel pump under the dash and checked the connection from the ignition and as I did the fuel pump kicked on, Loose connection, fixed it and was under way, Thats what I was talking about.

I had the same problem with my boat and I feel I have to stick in my two cents and tell you how it worked out for me. First of all, you certainly seem handy and know you way around your boat with the last fix you did, that honestly would have stumbled me for a bit(not to good with wiring). My boat would heat to around 200 after idling for awhile BUT I wanted to hit the season off and running.... so I just kept my eye on it and kept going. About three weeks later it heated up bad and there was nothing I could do about it because I was about 5 miles from home. I limped her back in and to make a long story short have a brand new engine now. After the thousands of dollars, time spent, and blood shed I just wish I had got up an hour early one day to take the time to fix my $50 impeller that had dry rotted and originally lost a fin.... but had none left when I remove the 3 screws to look at it. What is it that don S.'s quote says...... Just a suggestion
