i have been chasing my temp sensor problem since i got the boat. i have rang out the one wire going to it. i have replaced the sensor and the guage. i followed my manual on troubleshooting . im lost, i can not find anything wrong. so im writing you guys for help.
my coolent leak seems to be comming from the water pump area. i did notice that all the bolts are kinda loose. so im going to re torque them tomorrow night. has anyone had problems with bolts working them self loose? if so what kind of locktight cand i use.

my boat is a 1987 thomson 185 cutlass. with the 3.7 mercruiser 470 motor.

Ayuh,... Is the gauge Powered with 12V,..??
Is the Sensor properly Grounded,..??

The water leak is a sign of potential catastrophic failure....

Did anyone use teflon tape on the sending unit threads?

The sensor uses it's pipe threads (no tape needed) to make the ground it requires. Weak ground= no work!

Happy boating!

Take a close look at the lower starboard side of the engine water pump. There is a small weep hole there. Is the coolant coming from there? If so, you need new camshaft water pump seals. Common problem with the 470's. If it is, read this it will help you understand what is going on: http://www.sterndrives.com/470information/470coolantleakrepair.html

Not sure on the puller. You do not have to pull the engine if you have room to get the harmonic balancer off.
