Absolutely -- and while you are at it, add a water pressure gauge. Although many folks think a water pressure gauge will help avoid overheating, that is not its primary purpose -- that's what the temp gauge is for. A water pressure gauge tells you that the water pump is working. Even if the water pump is whizzing like a race horse, the engine can still overheat due to a thermostat failure or some other problem in the cooling system.

And while you are at it, run a separate wire and hook up an overheat buzzer or indicator light. While you are having fun, it is all too easy to ignore a gauge AND overheating can occur quickly, in the period between gauge glances. Only way to avoid that is to look at gauges 100% of the time.

10-4 on the light and buzzer although the engine should already have the buzzer. In case you are interested -- here is a way to do it. Ignore the oil alarm if you wish. If there is no alarm horn, Radio Shack has them for just a couple of bucks. Idiot lights (excuse me -- indicator lights) are also available at Radio Shack.

great suggestions, yes the boat already has a over heat buzzer and low oil, I have disconnected the vro. I am going to add a cylinder head temp guage just for my own peace of mind.

I have a faria temp gauge, it works great. Because of the temp gauge I found out that mu overheat buzzer goes off way to soon like at 80 degrees. I would say go ahead and buy one.

I have, in the past. I put them on Johnson/Evinrude V-4's.

The right side (looking from rear) always ran a bit hotter. If that side got hot, the rest was soon to follow.

They're a good idea.

I'm not much of a fan of water pressure guages. They measure pressure, not volume. Volume keeps things cool, not pressure.

But with no pressure you have no volume. Besides, volume through the engine is controlled by the thermostat and bypass valve which are "pressure" and temperature devices. Too much volume the engine over cools. Too little volume it overheats.

I've never had a temp gauge on an outboard. Never felt the need with built in over-temp alarm and S.L.O.W. I let them do their job and use the space for something more useful like a water pressure gauge.

With the pressure gauge and I see the pressure fluctuate as the stats or poppit value opens and closes. Any restriction in the intake or a broken hose is seen immediately. It also allows me to change my water pump on performance instead of a meaningless time based schedule.

FWIW: An outboard is cooled by a volumetric flow of coolant. You can not have volumetric flow w/o pressure. If you know the area and the pressure, it?s quite easy to calculate the flow and vice versa.

I like this. I "assume" you are talking head temp, not water temp ??? Can you save me time by posting a link please? Thanks.

Everyone did know what the topic of this thread was but NO -- not everyone knew you were actually looking for a Faria water temp/cylinder head temp gauge. Try right here on iBoats. See the blue button at the very top of this page that says MARINE STORE? Click it. Then in the SEARCH box type FARIA TEMPERATURE GAUGE. If you don't like the price, you can GOOGLE or YAHOO search using the same info. About 500 sources should show up. I thought everyone knew how to search for stuff. See how that works???

I have already researched the kind I want, and purchased from this wonderful sight. I just wanted to know if anyone has used one and if so or not, what there thoughts are about it.

gees i hope he has thick skin, I and WE dont need you ticking off one of the most helpfull guys on the forum!!!!!!!! its him and a half dozen others that will give 95% of all the good advice here...the advice you can feel confident in......

motors are dynamic and on the net its hard to hit a home run with an answer....so listenign to guys like Silvertip and going step by step and feeling confident it is good advice in the face of the solution not working out right away at home...is real important...

sooooo I guess id say that his 19K + post probably were more than helpfull!!! even if i didnt read half of them.

as far as the point he was trying to make....guys HELP YOUESELF a little and it goes a long way to letting other help you even more!!!

read what you wrote before you post it, make sure it makes sense...

ok i feel much better ha ha ha

I wouldnt try to change your thinking, but personally I totally dissagree with your thinking...

I know you are saying if the system is working, there are catches for problems...but in the real life that isnt the case

case in point...perfect water pump. pumping 25PSI!! which lets say is normal... and great....

over time your carbs get dirty and you start to get a lean condition...or you have a sudden blockage in the fuel flow in a coupel carbs, you are leaning out...the temps are spiking fast!!!

you see you have killer water pressure, but the actual head temp is so hot the water cant keep it in the range it needs to be in....you best hope your over heat alarm is working

same goes for when your kids friends fills up the gas tank and forgets about adding oil...you will start to over heat before you start to ruin stuff.....things will get hot!!! but the water pressure gauge says A OK...

I can actually run my motor for a short while with no water pressure...if i know the head temps... i can shut it down when i need to before damage happens... I like both gauges...

but id put the temp up higher than the pressure

just the way i look at it

Re: Temperature gauge anyone use one

Yes, I have a Faria cyl. head temp gauge on my console. All of my gauges are Faria, including a water pressure gauge. The cylinder head temp gauge came with the sensor and was very simple to install on the top cylinder head. I ran a #16 gage wire from the sensor on the outboard to the gauge, then ran and hooked up the other wiring to lights, ignition source and ground. Works great. And good piece of mind.
