Re: Temperature gauge anyone use one
I've never had a temp gauge on an outboard. Never felt the need with built in over-temp alarm and S.L.O.W. I let them do their job and use the space for something more useful like a water pressure gauge.
With the pressure gauge and I see the pressure fluctuate as the stats or poppit value opens and closes. Any restriction in the intake or a broken hose is seen immediately. It also allows me to change my water pump on performance instead of a meaningless time based schedule.
FWIW: An outboard is cooled by a volumetric flow of coolant. You can not have volumetric flow w/o pressure. If you know the area and the pressure, it?s quite easy to calculate the flow and vice versa.
I wouldnt try to change your thinking, but personally I totally dissagree with your thinking...
I know you are saying if the system is working, there are catches for problems...but in the real life that isnt the case
case in point...perfect water pump. pumping 25PSI!! which lets say is normal... and great....
over time your carbs get dirty and you start to get a lean condition...or you have a sudden blockage in the fuel flow in a coupel carbs, you are leaning out...the temps are spiking fast!!!
you see you have killer water pressure, but the actual head temp is so hot the water cant keep it in the range it needs to be in....you best hope your over heat alarm is working
same goes for when your kids friends fills up the gas tank and forgets about adding oil...you will start to over heat before you start to ruin stuff.....things will get hot!!! but the water pressure gauge says A OK...
I can actually run my motor for a short while with no water pressure...if i know the head temps... i can shut it down when i need to before damage happens... I like both gauges...
but id put the temp up higher than the pressure
just the way i look at it
