Does the factory temp sending unit only work with the over heating horn?
Would it work with a temperature gauge?

I doubt that it would work with a temp gauge. It will work with a light or a horn from a car.

The thermo sending unit is nothing but a bi-metal switch that is normally open or off and closes at certain temp. No you cannot use it for a temp gauge.

Thank you both, horn I have that came with boat extras. There are Thermo sending units that I could modify to fit hole in head and use the gauge. Hum, what will I do. ....

Some companies sell a gauge kit.
Try Teleflex or Faria
Your sending unit sends the alarm at 143d that i'ts getting too hot.

I switched controls (and ignition) and I'm unsure where to connect the black wire that extends from the overheat buzzer on my 1985 Force 85HP. The other wire that connects to the buzzer is orange and I know where to connect it.

You are hi-jacking another person's thread. You should start your own and it'll get a better response. The orange wire is your O. H. buzzer. it's also labeled on the terminal strip on the power head. Black wires are ground, there is also a screw on the terminal strip labeled ground. In the main wiring harness it will also contain a black (ground) wire.

Black wires aren't always ground.
In his case the buzzer comes with black leads.
One has to go to power the other to the orange.
