Temperature Sensor Question for Joe Reeves.....

In another thread concerning this issue you (Joe Reeves) suggested to a fellow, "mount an L-bracket to a head bolt and screw sender in bracket and let it touch the head." I'm getting ready to install a rebuilt powerhead on my 1979 Evinrude 140. I really liked this idea! If I do this, what would you consider to be a recommended temp reading for this motor and what would you consider as being high? Thanks......ALAN

I don't recall if I actually said "let it touch the head". That could result in a false reading. From experience, it has proven to be better if the final setting of the sensor is to have a clearance of .010 between the tip of the sensor and the cylinder head surface.<br /><br />Thermostats open at about 143° so the engine is going to register slightly higher than that. But pertaining to what reading on the gauge would be normal or high..... I'll leave that to the fellow members here who have experienced those gauge readings on their boats.
