Hi there. I have a 74 Mercruiser 140 I/O and I normally use Quicksilver Gear Lube Premium Blend (High Performance)in the lower end.

I'm going to be working on the lower end this Spring and was wondering if it was ok to use a GL5 75W-40 in it for about an hour so I can get it out of the water.

I'd rather not put $40.00 worth of gear lube in it just to drain it out right away.

thanks for any help

i think the quick silver stuff is a straight 30 grade for what its worth.. putting something else in for an hour wont do any harm..

trog100

Sure, no problem, but I wouldnt run it real hard for a long period of time, it may foam a bit too much.

One question Marc. WHY??
If you put in the right stuff, it's going to be good for 100 hours. Why do you want to put in a different kind of oil for only an hour and then change it again? I don't understand?

Don S. Good question.

It's possible that the oil was drained last fall and not refilled (don't ask). The boat is now on our boat ramp at our cottage.

I'm going to be pulling the boat out and doing an overhaul and draining the gear oil. I need to drive the boat to the public boat ramp. I will be using the correct gear oil when I put it back together.

I want to make sure I have everything I need to get it going temporarily.

Thanks, I was afraid your question was answered, but that you may have had a problem with the drive and just wasn't asking the right question.
Good luck with your overhaul.

For what its worth I used regular automotive gear oil in my Merc I/O's for years in salt water and never had a problem. Only Merc oil it ever had was when it came from the factory.

Regular gear oil will work just fine as long as you don't get water in the drive. Then you would have had a vanalla pudding that is near impossible to get out of the drive thru that little hole. Marine gear oil will absorb I believe up to 50% water and still keep it lubercating properties.

You can buy a gallon of automotive gear lube and change it four times a year for less than half the price of one change with Merc lube. I would rather change it four time a year rather than once. Plus if a leak does develop you will find it a lot sooner.

wal mart has a 80-90w marine gear oil for like $3 per quart. they have full synthetic castrol 75-90 marine gear oil for around $7 per quart. how much does your boat take? why not spend $6 bucks for Marine oil for the tempoary use?

Re: temporary gear lube mercruiser 140

Thanks for the help. I used 1.3 litres of 90W Marine oil at $4.00 a litre. I'm going to switch back to the Mercruiser stuff when I'm finished working on it.
