Hello

I haven't got a gauge installed yet but I want to see if she isn't overheating . I had her running for 10 min and the temp went to 160F and never went past. All on muffs and idle.

Really hate that theres no easy t-stat/poppit plate to just service the t-stat and poppit, real stupid design but it is what it is.

1)What temp should it idle at on muffs or in a barrel? And whats the normal running temp?

2) How can I trick/test the temp switch to see if the horn part of the system is working?

Thank You,
DamianJP

Take the hot horn wire, without going out and looking on mine I think it's the tan wire, and ground it to the block. The horn should go off. Key needs to be on. I'm not sure but 160 sounds about right.

Just whent out to the shop and checked the manual. Yes, it's the tan wire. And a 125 temp stick should not melt but a 163 should, so looks like your in the ball park at idle.

Ive put away the temp sticks. Infrared thermometers are so much easier now. They have really come down in price in the last couple years as well.

Thank you guys !!!

You guys are awesome, this forum is awesome !!

Well the IR Thermometer was alittle high at first, hottest spot was around 180F. With no water out of the 2 exhaust ports (with motor in barrel).

Then I revved it alittle and it seemed to unstick the thermo because it started to have a good trickle and mist out of the 2 ports, and the temps all when down to good ranges. It was used in salt so I guess from sitting and the salt build up it was stuck abit.

I took temps around the t-stat area , cylinder head top , Top cylinder area under flywheel abit. The top cylinder area under the flywheel was the hottest of all of them.

I tested the horn, and it worked fine when grounded.

Everything seems okay, I like to change the water pump/impeller when I dont know when the previous owner did it. But it seems like its pumping good and temps are good. So I think Im going to go the route of "dont fix it if its not broken route right now. I know a impeller is just $25-$35 but I dont just change impellers when I do that job. I usally change everything out the housing(s) and cup too, and thats $75 I cant afford to spend on this project right now.

What do you guys think?

Thank You !!!,
DamianJP

Personally, I would put a new impeller in it, you may not need to replace the housing. You can always replace that at a later time. But I have to warn you, taking the LU off this motor, especially if it's been in salt, will not be fun. There should be a hidden bolt under the trim tab. That trim tab bolt is long and may not come out easily. Prepare for broken bolts. You will need an oxy/act. torch. A little propane one won't do the job. Good luck to you sir.
