Tension on throttle return spring

78Rude6hp - Anyone know how to tension the throttle return spring (I believe that's the correct description) on the carb. Whoever "rebuilt" it didn't adjust the spring or or maybe broke it (I don't tnink so) so they rigged another spring somewhere else (which is too strong) to close the throttle. I'd like to "fix it right" and thought someone here might have some expertise on this. I had torn apart and cleaned the whole throttle grip assembly 'cause it was hard to turn. Turns out that that stiff spring was causing problems as well. Thanks.

There is not supposed to be any "throttle return spring". In fact, just the opposite is true. It is supposed to stay where you put it. That is the function of the spring and wedged plug in the twist grip.

If you are saying that the throttle "turns itself off", then chances are the coils are rubbing on the flywheel. When they rub, the flywheel rotates the armature plate, toward the "slow" direction. The ends of the coils' laminated cores are supposed to be flush with the machined edges of the posts on which they set. That gives a clearance between the laminations and the flywheel magnets.

Well...... Let me put it another way..... there's a short inkage that goes from the throttle shaft on the carb to the cam follower that rides on the throttle cam. There needs to be some tension on the spring that's on the throttle shaft to let the cam follower follow the throttle cam - right?

Right. There is a little coil spring wound around the throttle shaft. They don't even show a part number for it, I guess because you are not supposed to remove the throttle shaft. The screw is staked in. However, an older model (1968) does give the spring number, 312853.

Yes, thanks. Just got back in from being aggravated to you know where and back and have decided part of the spring that's suppose to hang on the carb body to create tension must be broken. That must be why someone before "Southern Engineered" it. I'll go to ACE in the AM and get a spring with less tension and "Southern Engineer" it the same way but better - as long as it works.
