test starter removed from motor

i have a 1973 sea ray srv 190 with 888 drive and 302 ford motor
i have starter out and trying to test it with jumper cables on a 12 volt battery
i shop tested it and it worked fine but for me it runs slow.
is my battery weak or does it need solenoid in system

found out what is wrong , jumper cables not heavy to run it .
touched starter on battery post and grounded it and it took off

It might be a good idea to have it tested more formally at your local NAPA or AutoZone. That way you can see how many amps it is drawing. When the internals start to wear, it takes more amps from the battery to turn the starter. No load condition starter will draw 60 to 150A. On the flywheel they can draw 200-250A. Ensure that your battery cables are not cheapies (thick insulation and not enough wire), the battery is in good condition and connections are tight.

If the starter pulls way to many amps, then have it rebuilt or pick up a new one. It has to turn a typical V8 300-350 rpm to start the engine.

Replace with marine unit or have yours rebuilt locally.
