Testing condenser/points on 63 Gale

Hi, all. Problem started on my 63 Gale 40hp and the #1 cyl. not firing, swapped plugs, same prob. So, I've removed the flywheel to check continuity on ignition wires, but I need to know how to go about checking the condensers and points, which isn't detailed in my book. Thanks!

Best way to check points is to pull the flywheel and inspect them. If they are pitted and worn, replace them...they're cheap. As for condensors, google 'testing condensors' and you'll come up with a diagram that shows you how to wire a flashlight battery to it once it's removed. The Intertech manuals for small outboards made before 69 or 70 also shows this diagram. You can also test with an ohm meter but I forget the process. Someone else will probably know and post here. Condensors can fail but they're usually not the culprit. Check all the wire connections on the mag plate. Good luck.

Thanks, I was actually hoping to find a way to do it with an ohm meter, but I have no idea how much resistance it should read. All the components underneath the flywheel look extraordinarily good. The ignition wires seem to be in good condition, but I think they're original, so I'm going to replace them just for the heck of it. Thanks again for your help.

Re: Testing condensers and coils on 63 Gale

Does anyone know how much resistance should be read on this? One of the coils is apparently original, so I'll go ahead and replace it anyway. Where is a good source online to get new parts for these old engines?

Since no one here is responding and I have forgotten, try the guys at the AOMCI board at http://www.aomci.org/askamember/index.html
They will also know where to get the parts...it should share coils/points/condensors with same era OMC's like E-rude or J-son so they might be available right here in the Iboats mall.

Condensors are impossible to test without the proper equipment. An Ohm or flashlight test proves nothing. However, bad condensors on this vintage are exceedingly rare.

If the points are clean and not rusty, they will work.

There are practically only two failure modes for ignition coils - creative ignition wiring where 12v gets to the coils and cracks in the insulation letting water in and sparks out. Both are very visible to the naked eye - burnt out coils will have holes and burn marks in their insulation, and ones with cracks will have obvious cracks. A resistance check on an ignition coil is a worthless endeavour.

Start by disconnecting and isolating the two black wires that come down from the armature plate underneath the flywheel and see if spark returns. That will eliminate all kill switches, boat wiring, vacuum cutout switch, etc.

I personally prefer the aftermarket coil 18-5181 sold via Iboats, NAPA autoparts, etc (<$20). This is a little less expensive than an OEM coil and seems better quality. The spark plug wires sort of screw into them rather than simply push, so look out for that. The points & condensor kits they sell (~$15) are fine too.

Just tell them you have a '63 Evinrude 40hp. No important differences except the water pump, midsection parts and carburetor.

Thanks, a lot guys! I appreciate your help as usual. This is the greatest website I've ever seen! By the way, on a separate issue, my original username (WetWillie) and it's correct password isnt working, so I created a new profile. Even copying and pasting both from the login retrieval that iboats emailed me doesnt work. No biggie since I have this new one, I was just curious as to what that problem may be.
