Hi folks,I have a 1983 johnson 200 and I believe my power packs are shot I did the diode test on both packs and and got a reading on my meter of infinity on plug terminal d (both packs)I did all the tests on the stator (good )sensor (good) but can`t do the test of output because I don`t have a cd volt meter any Idea what would cause both packs to blow or is it a common thing? this motor is driving me crazy!!!!!!!!!!! could the rectifier cause all tis to go bad?any help at this time would be good!thanks Mike:cool:

Mike..... You're stating what you suspect and what you've done, but you dont say what the problem is.

Is your problem that you do not have ignition/spark on any of the 6 cylinders? BTW.... the rectifier has nothing to do with ignition.

I`m sorry the boat does not want to throttle up starts fine, rev`s up runs fine on land but when you apply a load(put it in the water) it just bogs out Thanks Mike:confused:

That indicates a sticking timer base (retarded spark) or clogged, fouled carburetors. Usually it's the carburetors.

Re: testing diode in power packs

Make sure you tested the power packs correctly. Here's what my service manual says:

Set Ohms meter to high ohms. Disconnect four wire connectors from pack to timer base AND pack to ignition coils.

Place meter leads between white lead in cavity D and black/yellow lead in cavity D (note I have 79 Evinrude 175 V6) note reading.

Reverse leads and note reading.

An infinite (very high or open line 'OL') in both directions indicates diode is open.

Low ohms reading in both directions indicates shorted diode. Normal diode reads resistance in one direction and infinite (open line) in the other.

You may have more than one problem going here so before you mess with the carbs make sure ignition is working properly. Test the packs and coils and check for proper spark.
