is there a way for me to test my overheat horn w/o opening controls?

Yup.Turn the key to the 'on' position and ground the tan colored temp sensor lead to the engine block.Some of the older control boxes had a slot under the fast idle lever that you could insert a key or similar object into that would complete the circuit just for that purpose.

I just replaced my horn with one of the later self-test models. Cheap, easy and one less worry.
