I tried grounding the harness side of the tan wires w/ignition ON,but no beep or sound at all. This motor has never made a sound since I've owned it.Next step is to pull apart the control box to test the horn,if there's one in there, since there's not a slot by the key to do the remore test.First of all,any secrets to removing and disassembling the control box.And once I find the horn, what is the testing procedure?(j88msleim...91)Thanks to all!!!

Re: testing overheat horn

Dismantling the control box depends on which control box you have.

Horn has two slip on type terminals, to test..... apply battery positive 12 volts to one terminal, ground the other terminal to the battery negative terminal.

Re: testing overheat horn

On the standard side mount control (after 1987 at least), the horn either self tests with a single beep when you turn the ignition to on, or there is a slot under the warm up lever to insert a spare key that will sound the horn when the ignition is on.

Test the harness from the red plug to the control by unplugging the red plug and grounding the tan wire connector to the engine block with the ignition turned to on.

If neither test is found to sound the horn, disconnect the battery and unscrew the whole remote control unit from the boat so that you can reach the back of the case.

Re: testing overheat horn

ThanksJoe!My remote looks like the original eqpt.w/idle on top, ignition and tach lead towards the stern and throttle on left(w/OMC stamped in the circle at the base of the shifter).Looks like 2 phillips mounting screws and a circular piece(1 1/2" d)with 4 small holes in it on the port side.Sorry I couldn't find any #'s...should be circa 1991.
