I have a 40 hp evinrude. I want to do the "test in a barrel". Don't I need a disk of some sort to replace the prop so it doesn't churn up the water and kill me in the process? What's it called and where can I get one?
Thanx

No, I've been doing this in a 55gal drum since the late 50's, without any problem. If need be, you can put it in gear, and run it at low speed, but you can't open it up, it's not a test tank like the dealers use with a "test wheel".

They are called test wheels or sometimes test props. You have to have the right one for your motor. They are listed in the specifications page of your factory service manual. Older ones show up on ebay from time to time.

If you don't have one, you can usually work with the boat in the water, secured to a dock, or firmly strapped to a trailer.

Re: Testing the engine

Forget the test prop for running it in a barrel, It won't help much at all. You cannot run a 40 in a barrel at anything above idle. Even if you had a test prop and put it in gear, give it any throttle to speak of and you will have a barrel-full of water on your feet.

This way, you'll know for sure how much throttle you can get away with! :D
