This Red Fish was caught yesterday at Green's Bayou in the Galveston West Bay area by my friend Billy McCann. Check out what i found in it's belly..... That's right a used shot gun shell What is sad is i have removed trash from several fish in my time, and i am just one person. So when you think heck what is one little shell in all of this water....Well now you know do your part folks and take your trash with you its not hard!!! Peace

That would be the wadding to a duck hunters steel shot load. It would be nearly impossible to find that thing after firing your shot... and that Red may have eaten it as soon as it hit the water.

I bet the red thought it was a white shrimp. Like jig said, probably splash, gulp, honey where's the Pepto.

I don't know much about guns and hunting, but really? Every time someone lets off a round, one of those shoots out into the water or the field and usually just gets left there by the hunter? How does that stay legal?

+1 jigngrub. It just happens. I've been fly fishing before and caught a 18 inch Rainbow with a 3 inch swim bait (hook and all) in it's belly--the trout tasted good and I got a new bait.

First let me start off by saying that i've hunted all my life. Second if i had a dollar for every pop can, bottle, and tire that ive seen during my very extensive time on the river i'd be a millionaire. its unfortunate that fish had the "wad" in the stomach its not the whole shell. all the guys i hunt with pick up their shells when they're done so as not to get a bad rap. i guess it just ticks me off when people complain about hunters. most of the hunting population takes time to make sure to leave the woods just as clean as when we went into them. sorry for the rant.

Nice to know. I didn't know how this worked and from the sound of it, the things shot out too far to find. Thanks for the response.

It always shoots out too far to retrieve. If you can find the wad 1 out of 50 shots you are lucky. It's the cup that contains the shot (round balls) or slug in the shell and suspends it above the powder. Do a quick google search on a shotgun shell breakdown and you will see it.

The shells are easy to find (red plastic and brass) and pick up, the wad... not so easy.

Wow what a response, i would like to clarify that after some input from friends that indeed that is the shot wad and not the whole shell and now i understand it is almost impossible to retrieve after being shot from a gun barrel OK. And second i am not trying to pick on any one group or individual! I also am a "guilty" party... of tossing things overboard being in the offshore industry i was made aware of the growing problem with the litter issue. I just wanted to make a statement (to raise awareness) not point fingers at hunters are fisherman are anyone who works or plays on our waterways....cmon people really. =^:^=

A guide told me tailing Reds, chasing shrimp in shallow water will hit anything thrown at them. I pick up spent shells when dove hunting at the end of the day, and sometimes others if we end up hunting near each other. More often than not my actions alone encourage others to do the same. I'm sorry to say, but respectfull, usually older, hunters are being outnumbered In my area today, and the sport needs all the good publicity it can get, not careless, arrogant actions. Wads cannot be recoverd easily, and I believe some are made to bio-degrade nowadays.

Re: Texas Red Fish Packing Ammunition:

in older shot gun shells that were made of paper there was also a paper or fiber wad that was biodegradable. i sometimes wonder if they shouldnt go back to them. ive also heard about shot that is actually made of seasoning. never seen them though. i totally agree with mommicked we do need all the good publicity that we can get.

Re: Texas Red Fish Packing Ammunition:

what ticks me off is i will spend the first hour of the day to cast net some nice pinfish or finger mullet. be soaking wet for the next 3 hours, and some times the redfish will eat some times not. while sight fishing casting $15 lures at them and they snub the offering, but they will eat a spent shotgun shell! thats it, I'm going to rig up a few shot gun shells tonight with a trebble hook out the back, going to make 2 types, 1 will be a spent shell with a hook for the ones who want to bite, the other will be a live shell for those who turn up their nose at the last second, a quick jank of the rod and BOOB! blackened redfish! LOL

Re: Texas Red Fish Packing Ammunition:

That won't work. The hulls MUST be just shot from a shotgun, they like the smell/taste of freshly lit gunpowder, Just like me!! I recall when I was a kid tossing the old poptop off a soda can overboard and watching it seasaw towards the bottom when a large king or cuda snatched it in a flash of silver and white.
