well now i am certain i like the old evinrude over the old merc much easier to work on and the evinrude guys seem alot more helpful than the merc guys.i have been dealing with a 1964 evinrude 75 electric shift that the guys are excellent help with and it is running like a top after sitting 7 years.we had a few little bugs got them worked out plus got a manual when i purchased the boat which indeed helps. The other side of the coin is a 1965 merc 65hp that my brother bought and i got elected to help with ,waiting on a manual got some info about it from the forum, these things are miserable to work on i thought ford made things tight ,as i am a tech for a ford dealer. are the newer mercs as bad to work with or is it just me ?

Both are excellent examples of American engineering...one's just a little more complicated and occasionally cranky than the other.
