I have the tach set up as you told me. I am trying to get the old girl running good. I have been thru the carbs twice just like the manual said and have syncronised the engine just like the manual says put in new points and plugs. The block assembly was replaced by previous owner and then the amp went out and he sold it to me. I replaced the amp, she starts fine and runs good at about 3/4 throdle but starts to die a little at full throddle and has some hesitation<br />when starting to build speed. If my tack is right she will only build about 3000 rpms and run about 30 mph on a 16 ft runabout. My brother in law has a boat very close to mine and has a thirty horse nisson on it and according to my gps they run the same speed Any suggestions ????????

I dont think your tach is right. 30 mph at 3000 rpm is not likely from a 55 hp. on a 16 footer. You would have to be running a 27 pitch prop, which that motor cant spin. I think your tach is reading 1/2. I know Joe Reeves is much more knowledgable than me so hopefully he will chime in. But from 1968-72 these motors had a different ignition system and the tach may not work hooked up that way. I dont know why it dies at full throttle, maybe starving for gas.

In all probability the carburetors need cleaning.<br /><br />Tell us exactly how that tachometer is hooked up, and do you have the dial on the back of it set to #6?

I ran a wire for the ignition to the hot wire and a ground and then I ran a wire from the terminal on the back of the tack (that says evinrude & johnson to sending unit ) I ran this wire to the rectifier yellow wire ( this rectifier has two yellow wires no yellow & grey I do have the tach set on 6 poll
