Hi again chaps!
Sorry to trouble again but I need your help once more!. On the port side of my big twin, just above the cavitation plate, there is a hole roughly 5 inches long and about half an inch wide. There is a screw hole at either end so Im assuming that there is a cover or plate missing.
On the diagram in the service manual the said hole does in fact seem to have a cover. There also appears to be four small holes in the cover on the right hand side. Perhaps one of you clever chaps could tell me (a) What is the large hole that this plate covers and(b) Does the plate completely seal the large hole,if so, what is the point of the 4 small holes in the plate?.
Hope this is clear!
Regards
Tich

That plate is a water intake plate, and yes it does have holes in it. There is a water intake screen also in front of the exhaust outlet just below the cavitation plate.

Re: "That little plate"

The plate on my 18 was badly corroded, I used it as a pattern to make a new one from aluminium.

Re: "That little plate"

The only tricky bit was the screw holes, on the original they are countersunk but the countersink is pressed in not drilled. If you drill them it leaves a gap behind the plate and you need to put a spacer washer in there, otherwise the plate will distort when you tighten the screws. I drilled the countersink and used a pair of thick nylon washers as spacers, I put a drop of threadlock on the screws too.
I don't think the size of the holes in the plate is too critical, but FWIW I drilled mine around 3.5mm.
