The 800 Went Down!!

On the lake last weekend cruising along about 50 and heard this terrible sound of metalic parts shattering and shut the engine down. I have no forward or reverse now. Prop will not turn either. I checked the upper fluid and it looks like dark gray muck, lower fluid is ok. I still have not pulled the drive off to check it out but will soon. The engine still runs fine. It's a 1978 OMC 225 with a Stringer 800 drive. Does this sound like the water pump drive or more?

I dunno, if the prop won't turn it sounds like something more than just the the water pump shaft. With the problem killing the engine, I vote for a siezed upper gear case.

soon as you pull the pump the gear comes with it, look in the upper you can see the other gear.

i too think it's the upper.

Upper case is notorius for breaking on these....

Usually the water pump shaft.

I hope to get the drive pulled over the weekend, waiting on a manual to arrive. I don't want to tackle it without that. I think from the sound it made when it broke it's more than the pump shaft. Anyway, the lower fluid looks good and clean and has no burnt smell or metallic parts.
