My Grandfather bought this brand new in 1960 from Chappels Department store in Syracuse NY

I have the original warranty paperwork, a brochure for other westies, and a parts catalog (YAY!!)

paper work is in mint condition lol, but motor has been stored indoors and not run in over 20 years. Last time ran fine then stored

So I FINALLY dragged it out last night to start tinkering with it.

cleaned the points and now have spark on #1 cylinder and none on #2

I believe while cleaning I don't have #2 points set right and will check today.

I wanted to know if anyone has any info on these motors to share. I've looked online and have found very little. If I do get it running I have no idea where to get a water impeller.

West bend made crockpots, and sold the outboard division to chysler, and then it was discontinued :-(

Here is another shot of the motor

one last thing....in the manual it says to put "underwater Grease" in the lower unit....I am assuming the same kind of lower unit lube I put in my johnson 48 ??

Uh, no...not the same. The manual is referring to old-style LU grease...Lubriplate 105 white lithium engine assembly grease is the modern equivalent, or corn-head grease if you live in farm country. This site has a West Bend service manual: www.acmeoutboards.com if you need it.
The guys on the Ask A Member board at www.aomci.org can probably help you find an impeller.

I live in central NY.
My period after market manual indicates EP90 gear lube standard outboard gear lube will work.I think if you check your manual you'll find grease is for the straight drive outboards.56,57 12hp use a 1600 series number ie:16902 ( 56 12hp)
My info indicates 16s were 59 motors 60, 61 and 62 were 18,63 one manual says 16 and a 20. other 20. 64,65 20 hp.Perhaps yours was a left over. Do you have a model number? 16XXX.59 motors are 16:1 ,60 24:1. ratio.

IT RUNS!!!!!

I cleaned off the points, reset them, and fresh gas. It fired right up

Impeller is pumping good

ran it for about 20 minutes in a barrel and never overheated. FWD and Reverse work

Pullled it from the barrel and checked lower unit lube. It is not millky, just old looking and has the same smell/consistancy of the gear lube I use in the Johnson

Model # is 16902

Not bad for a motor not been started in over 20 years :D

There are 4 models 16901,16902,16911,16912.
I figure short shaft long shaft ,short electric ,long electric??
56 12hp 16902,is a missprint should be 16090 As appears in Peter Hunns
The Old Outboard Book.

Re: The Adventure Begins: 1960 West Bend 16 HP

I very much appreciate that! It is the same impeller and I will be ordering one shortly

Anything Scary to be aware of when pulling the LU? Gaskets I need to worry about

The LU has not been removed in over 20 years so am not sure what kind of surprises I will find.

One thing I noticed is this is a very dirty running motor.....the Barrel (I also run my 50 HP in ) gets dirty with exhaust oil very quickly compared to the 50

Last question.....looking at the brochure I have it seems that some of these motors also were or could be setup with remote controls

Would it be possible to set up this one? was there a "kit" offered? I am thinking it would be possible to fabricate something. I have a set of controls from the Johnson 25hp Seahorse Granddad also owned (is gone unforetunatly) and am thinking I may be able to rig those up.

This motor is hopefully going to go on a 1954 Feathercraft boat

The pump is pretty easy. I do believe the shift rod disconnect is on the outside of the motor leg. At least it is on the '59. It is a turnbuckle affair with a right and a left hand threads. When you put it back together, start the coupling on both rods at the same time and screw it on till neutral in the lower unit is neutral on the shift lever, then tighten the lock nut. The rest is just easy common sense.

I expect that remote controls certainly must have been available, but I don't remember anything about how they connected. It must have been a Rube Goldberg, considering the way the shift and throttle works.

Dirty? I did notice one thing, mine barely smokes at all. But the oil that you put in the gas has to go somewhere. It either burns (smoke) or it goes out the exhaust...into the barrel. To be a nice guy, use Penzoil 100% synthetic TCW-3 outboard oil (Wal-Mart). It's bio degradeable.

Fuel line assembly

Fuel line assembly

I just got a 18hp 1960 pretty much like this one...
The fuel line fell in pieces when i tried to remove it to replace.
Which connector of the fuel pump goes to carburator? The long or short one???

Welcome to iboats Jean. You will probably get some flak for reopening a four year old thread, but you will know better next time. Always start a new thread. As for your question, you can only blow through the pump in one direction. That is the direction the fuel flows.
