The motor is now running. Is the clear fuel bowl supposed to be full all the time? I think I have an air leak in the primer ball. Click the link to see the motor running, sometimes it sputters or backfires a bit. I think it is starving for gas.

The clear fuel bowl will not be full when running. It's normal.

Re: The beast comes to life!!!!

Thanks for the advice on the bowl. Do you think it is chugging because the fuel is sucking air? Is there a fuel filter that may be clogged? I have video of that occurring, I can upload that to show the sounds of the problem. On low idle as shown in the video, it stopped "burping" but when the throttle is advanced a little it would hesitate and then resume running. Maybe the seafoam was starting to get things cleaned out. I'm replacing the fuel line from the motor to the tank including the ball. The inside of the engine has all new fuel lines.

My camera girl did not get proper instruction for the shot. LOL!

Looks like the starter is still engaged when it is at idle. I would get that taken care of or you will be needing a new one.

+1. The bendix on the starter should pop up, engage and spin the flywheel, then drop back down out of the way. I would remove the starter and rebuild it, if at all possible. Getting the motor out on the open water and up to temp will help the Seafoam do its job as well. You can also fine tune to carb on the water as well.

The port side is the generator, the starter is on the starboard side of the motor. You can see the belt driving the generator if you look close. Open water is next!

I think you need to strip the starter and clean up the shaft so the bendix drops back down properly.Though it is normal for the filter bowl to not stay full when running,I would not be happy with all that frothing and bubbling that's going on.I think you have an air leak some where on the pickup side of your fuel system, probably between the connection on the motor and the filter bowl.

I don't think many guys have seen these gennys. If you haven't seen one I could see how you could confuse it for a starter, although starters don't have belts on them ;)

Ill assume you have tried richening up the idle screw 1/4 turn? Sounds like a mild lean sneeze. Also as stated ensure there are no air leaks in the system.

I will try to adjust the idle screw a little. And there is definitely an air leak, I can tell there is bubbling going on in the primer bulb. I'll fix that and try it again this weekend. Maybe sooner if the bulb comes in the mail.

Sounds like it is running on 2 cylinders. You might check spark plug color.
Also the fuel pump sight bowl should be fuller that that. The fuel pump seems to surge, and pump fuel in spurts and then not for a while. I recommend you clean it up, expecially the check valves.

PN-
No gasket on the glass bowl that I could see, but that is a good place for one. is there supposed to be one there? That could be a place where air is getting in as well. Thanks! And yes the motor spins clockwise. The video was really shaky but youtube has a stabilizer.

Chris-
I will check the plugs for color, but what check valves are you referencing?

from the glass bowls i've encountered it's always been cork. cork swells when wet, sealing the surfaces real gooood. i'm sure someone knows where to find the stuff.

Re: The beast comes to life!!!!

Awesome thanks HighT and pn. I am looking forward to puting it in the tank on Saturday again and rev it up some. If I have it at idle speed, would I be ok to put it forward and then reverse gear for a second? Will the barrel empty out? I haven't had an engine this big in a garbage can before.

Yeah for testing will be ok. Don't start revving the crap out of it though or it could run away on you without proper back pressure. Ill shift them to ensure the gearcase is functioning.

Re: The beast comes to life!!!!

Cool, I'll be easy on the throttle. Hopefully with a cork gasket in the bowl, and the new fuel line and primer bulb, my air leak will go away. I'll upload new video to show progress on Saturday. Thanks again for the advice.
