I see, so put the gap at its widest point and hold it there to set gap. I am assuming that to synchronize, just listen to the sound of the engine and make it run smooth as possible. With the throttle all the way back at idle, the engine should stay running if the jets are set right?

That pretty much covers it. Adjust carb idle mixture to achieve smoothest and fastest running. Adjust throttle cable to slow motor down if necessary. Adjust High speed needles to achieve fastest speed and smootest running. I never got more than 27 MPH out of my fattys....good luck with that.

Timing is set good now, I could see where the point was at its farthest opening and that is where I set them at 20. I lightly seated all of the needle adustment screws. Only one low speed jet was near 1 1/2 turns the rest were more (yes even the high speed jets). Then 5/8 out for the HS and 1 1/2 for LS jets. Oh and top speed duly noted:faint2:

Ther is always oily residue weeping from this hole after it is test run. Where is it leaking from?? This picture is port side of the motorweep hole.jpg

Just in case uyou do not know. That grating is the cooling water inlet for when the motor is in reverse.

Cool, I wondered why there was one on the side and in the trim tab. Usually I see them on just the sides. Thanks Chris. I see you posted on the other string too. I didn't know if you were still following this one. I'm going to post video link here on Saturday to show the latest tank test. I adjusted the linkage, timed everything, set all the gaps, and fixed the air leaks (I think). Here we go again.

Re: The beast comes to life!!!!

The engine ran ok, but not great. I am having trouble with the timing and setting the points. The first set is no problem, but finding the place where the second set is set from is a mystery. The engine ran for about a half an hour and then I started adjusting the jets and the thing died and I couldn't get it started again. It was in the sun at 90 degrees, so I got overheated (myself) and put the boat back in the garage. What am I doing wrong. Oh and by the way, it looks like gear lube coming out of the weep hole. I'm going to open up the LR and drain the oil and see if it is contaminated with water, I suspect it is.

Re: The beast comes to life!!!!

The oil leaking out of the weep hole is just unburnt fuel mix that acts as lubrication. Worry if you don't see it.

Re: The beast comes to life!!!!

I dont know anything at all about these fat 50 engines, BUT should there be water comming out the top exhaust ?
how do you know if its getting cooling ? i presume these dont have a tell tale ? or do they ?

But it looks like that engine is definitely running better than the first vids, and its smooth in and out of gear.

very nice old beast i reckon, runs better than mine at the moment thats for sure.

be good to see a vid of this when it goes on the water.

Phil, That "top" exhaust is the spitter(that is the scientific term for it). They were on lots of 50's and 60's big twins and the early V4 motors. Water will exit there when the thermostat opens. You can measure the temp of that exhaust water and tell if the motor is overheating.

Thanks Phill and Chris is correct on all counts (as usual). The water temp is 140 degrees which I believe is within the good range. I'll definitely post more videos when more progress has been made.

Re: The beast comes to life!!!!

Cool, now if I can get it to run smoothly. Hey Chris, When I set the second set of points, how do I know if the flywheel is in the correct position? Is there a way I can make sure? I was thinking to take out the plugs and measure the TDC of the piston from the plug hole surface, and then transfer that dimension to the next piston and match it. Would that work? Also, where should the distributor be? I'm guessing in the same position as it was for the first set. Gotta get this better, it runs kinda funky sometimes.

Re: The beast comes to life!!!!

I would think marking the distributor pully base at exactly the 90* position from the first timing mark is the right way. You can figure that out with a tape measure. Measure the circumference and divide by 4.

I never really looked, but I think the points work together. One set opens first, and stays open, until the second set opens and fires the coil.

I would think if you set the second cylinder to TDC, using a dial indicator, you can make a timing mark on the pully bracket, lined up with the timing mark on the pully. Not sure why those timing marks went away, or were never there. Maybe Joe Reeves knows.

Marking the second timing point should be easy now. I don't know why there is no mark. That doesn't sound like a very precise proceedure for the factory to put in place. Not saying it's not right, just seems short sighted. I will set the second set for the forth time and see if I can get it right. It runs so good sometimes.

Re: The beast comes to life!!!!

I just read all of this and I think we are both at about the same stage. There is a link in the "top secret" thread that has a link within for a manual. It has helped me tremendously! Also, the second timing mark was really hard for me to find also. I'm not sure if yours is there, but mine was kind of hidden toward the very front of the motor. Oops. That would be aft, right? :) I'll try to take a picture of it tomorrow if you are still having trouble finding it. Then again, this last post was a couple months ago, so maybe you have it all worked out by now.

One more thing... Just for the information, the fuel bowl on mine was completely full while I ran it. Mine didn't run as well as yours though. At least not yet.

It's not perfect, but at least now I know it will run adequately for me, and I can take it off and fix the boat now. I have some rot in the floor to deal with and then gel the hull and paint the cap.

The floor rot is something that scares me. I see the pics of floor restores on here, and it looks like a LOT of work. I hope it goes well for you.
