As far as dessert you just can't beat conolies (ep). Cheese of course, the cream ones are terrible.

I make a ham and potatoes casserole that is so good that there is a list of people who I have to invite over every time I make it. I have to make 2 large casseroles every time and its always gone.

Very simple to make but it takes time to cut up the potatoes, make the white sauce, boil the taters, cube the ham, mix together with corn and onion (i cook the finely chopped onion in the white sauce). Cover with shredded cedar then it all goes in the oven until it is bubbling.

Fat-Back? How much pleasure is it to eat lard? I can feel my arteries closing up just thinking about this.

You have to fry it until crispy and use the fat to season the collards. When I was living up north everything was loaded with butter,so I don't see much difference.

Brook Trout caught that day cooked over the camp fire with butter and onions. Melts in your mouth.

Sharing that with fishing buddies and a lot of homemade Sangrea. Doesn't get any better than that.

You are from CA, so you may never have had real blueberries.
We get lots of produce from CA which includes something that is labelled as "blueberries', but are something else entirely. Real blueberries are about 1/4 the size, and 10x the flavour. We now have to label them as "Wild blueberries" to differentiate.

The ones we picked were TINY like you said but damn man were they good, and soft to sleep on. The wild plants seem pretty sparse too, it took an hour to pick a small sandwich bag full. I've never found a store bought blueberry anywhere near that good. Thankfully the bears spared us, though we've met them on other occasions up there.

Years ago, I had the most incredible fresh peach pie at John McNallys, on the river, in Kernville California. They are still there, always crowded but I looked up their website and I do not see the peach pie on it.

When I was raisin' my 9 kids, we used to go foraging for blueberries, rasberries, june berries, choke cherries. We made maple syrup and raised a big garden. Milked a cow, raised chickens, etc.

One fall I managed to saw a couple of fingers off my right hand. Had them nailed back on and while they were healing it was pretty difficult to do anything productive to make money. We went through a winter on $300 a month.

One morning we were eating whole wheat pancakes that were wheat a half hour earlier, with Northern Minnesota wild blueberries in em, flooded with home made butter and real maple syrup, with venison sausage as the meat, and of course real fresh eggs.

We got to laughing at our "poverty". I know rich folks that can't afford to eat like that.

I was there for 3 days and I ate it for lunch and dinner everyday. They served it as an appetizer, but I made a meal out of it.

you live in vancouver wash?....

do you come to the okanagan?.......if you can ever be here mid august........stop at any orchard.....(not shopping store) and taste a ripe peach. .....wear a towel....flavor like that doesnt come in a can...or a store......my mouth is still watering.....and i have just had 3 !

Ribeye steaks cooked over a wood fire, salad that was just in the garden an hour before, fresh sweet corn fresh from the garden, and fresh baked peach pie from the trees out back. Close second pancakes with sweetcorn for breakfast with maple syrup.

The prime rib fro the Corner House in Racine WI. I have traveled the world over and not found better anywhere. 2nd choice was a lasanga from a back alley sidewalk cafe in Rome Italy. My bride and I were just wandering around and came across this place and it was without a doubt the best ever. NOW desert.... A STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE.

Mesquite grilled steaks, mmmmmm! Growing up in AZ we would go out in the desert and pick up a bunch of downed mesquite, burn it to a bed of coals and grill off that. I've never had a steak since them that compares.

Second to that would be bluefin tuna, yanked right out of the ocean, cut up by the galley cook into sashimi (raw). Dip a piece of it in a mix of soy sauce and wasabi, WOW!

Grilled Elk with garlic and onions, garden fresh fried ochre, rosemary potatoes and fresh blackberry cobbler. All from scratch.

There are other dishes that we've had that are good - that's just a recent one.

Pies made from any...or all ...of those are exactly as QC suggests.
With an admitted bias, option c) is by far the best. An exotic and relatively rare, treat.

they aren't that rare...I see all kinds of people selling them on the highway coming from work. There must be 6 or 8 sellers every day on the way home...

I prefer the wild Newfoundland blueberry to bakeapples....

They aren't that rare in Nfld., but try getting them in the rest of the country.

They don't travel well at all.
