Okay, so as some of you have seen, i have recently purchased a new to me 1994 Capri with a 3.0 and alpha one stern drive.

Really im just trying to get an understanding and learn about this stern drive and what i need to do to keep it running in the best shape. Things to look out for, common issues, tips and tricks. I had an OMC 2.5/3.0 in my last boat and the mercruiser is essentially the same engine from my understanding, just updated. So anything to look out for on the engine, the drive and everything inbetween.

For example ive been reading that when shifting into forward or reverse you kinda gotta 'slam' it into gear as to engage the dog clutches properly. Is there truth to this? And what other things to take note of?

I wouldn't call it 'slamming', just a decisive move, as opposed to 'easing' it in.

Other don'ts: Don't start the engine with the drive tilted full up... Do not, EVER run the engine without water being supplied via flushers.

You will understand the shifting once you do it a few times. If you don't do it swiftly you will get chatter as the clutch dogs try to engage. Just do it with intent. Keep up on the impeller, bellows and alignment. Winterize it. It doesn't take a lot to keep those engines/drives going for a long time but if you let it go it will get expensive.
