Hello All,
for years I have been thinking about how to set up a kicker or small outboard auxillary motor for trolling, emergencies, or whatever. It always seemed expensive and buying a set of new controls and a small outboard could easily run $4,000.
I figured out a way to do it for around $500. Buy an old Evinrude or Johnson 3-15 HP from the 1950's or 1960's. There are a lot of them out there, and you can pick one up for around $300 or so. Then, bolt up a kicker mount. You can find used ones for less than $100. Then, buy a set of Evinrude/Johnson "Simplex" controls with two levers. These controls should bolt right up to your little motor, one cable is for the throttle and one cable is for the gear shifter. Then buy an auxillary motor rod that hooks together your big and small motors. I think the kit is about $40.
that's it!
