I've learned a ton about DIY'ing my stuff here, and just learned another "new" thing. A week or so ago I was adjusting the choke on my 4.3's wih the 4V Merc/Weber/Carter carbs and managed to break the cover of the electric choke coil. Just a dumb move. Anyway, that coil is gasketed and pretty well sealed up. It was still working fine but I figured it might not last long in the salt air.
Shopped around for another to find out that Merc gets $100 (!) for the stupid thing, and Sierra isn't much better. That's when I remembered reading here numerous times, that the Edelbrock 1409 carb is a direct bolt-on replacement for mine. Sooo, on to the Edelbrock website, get the part number of the choke coil (1474) and ordered one from Ebay.
Came with the same gasket as the Merc part, and even the male/female terminals are exactly the same. Fits like a glove and works the same as the original. The best part? It cost me $17.49, shipping included.
