Hi all, this is a 1989 16' Foxcraft that I picked up a while back. The good is the out side of the boat is not to bad for the year model and I like the lines of the boat.

The bad the transom has rot and needs rebuilt as you can see in the photo the outboard weight has made it sag back about 1/2 inch

The ugly

the previous owner didn't use this boat for the last 10 years and didn't use it much before that. I know this because I drove by his house almost every day. With good intentions he tilted the front of the boat up and put a tarp over it pulled tight with bunjie staps. but someting had stopped up the back drain so it sat half full of water for who knows how long causing all the rot. Ok now to the questions to you guys first how hard is it to pull the top cap off a boat like this to get to all the wood underneath. Next question is how much should I plan to spend to take out all the wood seacast the transom and replace the bottom decking. The casting decks seam to be fine. Or would I be better off just finding a used boat hull with solid wood still in it and swap motor seats etc. over to it. Thanks for looking and for any input.

Re: The good the bad and the ugly

From your pictures, you will not only be doing the transom, floor but also the stringers as well. It is not hard work, but it does take lots of time. As far as cost goes, if you do it yourself, my guess is $2 to 3K, more if you need to do the upholstery. Unfortunately even if you buy another boat from that era, unless it has been recently repaired, there is a reasonable chance that it has some rott. There is lots of good info, just search the stringers, floor or deck and you will be reading for days.

Have a great day,

WOW 2 to 3 K will it really cost that much. I knew the stringers would have to come out as well. The outboard is ok but since it's been sitting for years all the seals water pump etc. will have to be replaced. One more thing that I forgot to ask here is has anyone ever used the senthetic decking boards that are for building outdoor decks on houses. The stuff you see at Lowes and places like that.Would that work for both the stringers and for the decking so that you would have no wood at all. I know it's heaver and cost more but would it save you on fiberglassing time and cost.
