These vehicles have hit the market down-under.

As I just purchased a new one in a common brand (will tell you later about it), I was a little curious as to how a chinese made vehicle would stack up.

Sorry to say, it is every bit as good as.
It comes standard with leather fit-out....so that's a very big extra.
But it is a petrol motor (I think) and that is ancient technology in itself.... it should be diesel...petrol is history in these vehicles now.
It's tow capacity is approx 750kg down on mine, but get this.....

the darned thing at $27k (full retail), not quite half the price of mine at $51k,
Nissan is $48k,
Mitzibushi $50k,
Toyoto SR5 $56k

I guess the big problem comes when they release all their different styles of vehicles on to our market, because my wife will buy a fully loaded equivalent of a Mazda CX9 Luxury, if it is half the price, in less time than it takes me to tell you about it.

My gut reaction is to find flaws in the thing because it is so cheap. But in all reality the only reasons I can think of to not but one of those would quickly turn this into a political thread.

That's interesting. Basically, except for the front bumper, grill & fenders, it's a knock-off of the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon/Isuzu D-Max.

I wonder if they had permision or if they just stole the design like they did with the Fiat Panda to make their Peri. Same car, just a different front grill.

Oh I am certain they just stole it !!!!
I am an engineer in the auto industry and they have stolen many patented processes that were developed in North America. Nobody seems to want to do anything about it though.

So you guys have the Colorado.....we have it too.
I didn't know it was made for your market.

In that case do you have Nissans Navara, (which is the best bang for your bucks at the moment), and the Mitzi Triton, (which to me seems more a weekend warriors pick-up), and the best of them is the Toyota Hilux SR5, but it's pricing is rediculious.

They are all diesel.
Mine is 3L turbo and getting 10.5L/100K or 27 mpg around town......and it is much faster than the wifes V6 3L petrol....which dosen't even look like keeping up.

I just got the Ford Ranger XLT with every extra I could find. They come out of Thailand apparantly. Couldn't get a leather seat fit-out though, nor cruise control.

Had this Great Wall be here, and if it had a Diesel and auto, I would definitely have looked at one seriously.

One of the big mistakes your auto industry made was stop making right hand drive F and C trucks.
It left the rest of the world with nothing to buy in this category, and guess what, the Japs and Koreans filled the market for you, sold them to us in absolutely mass numbers, and then sold them in to you competing with your home grown product.
It is so frustrating.....every one in country areas needs a decent sized pick-up, and we couldn't buy one......sorry, there was the F250 power stroke out of Brazil, but they wanted $75k......I mean.....do they thing the consumer is stupid.....so sales staggered along for several years then they stopped it because it wasn't selling. I could take you from here to the post office (10 mile) and I'll bet you we will see at least 10 new Asian made pick-ups, .....and we couldn't count the older ones we would pass, and not 1 American.

I too don't like the Chinese for their poaching our ideas, but I am not convinced our manufacturers treat us very well.......especially the larger ones.

the me service is a big part of buying a vehicle, if they have the service, i would probably have to buy one also.

Let's keep this about the Truck, not politics.

Did the touchy feely thing with them when they hit the market in Ghana a couple years ago ... single wall, thinner metal fenders and bed, fits and finishes were not up to par, dealer had some engine issues, basically they were basic transportation. If you were going to work them hard, you were out of luck because they would wear out 2 times as fast. If I didn't have the money for a new, or good used truck I might look at one, but I would realize I was getting a cheap (not just inexpensive) version of the real thing.

Almost everything is made there already, lot of peoples used to be skeptical about the Kia and Huyndai but more and more are on the road today.

Those are ridiculous looking trucks by the way. They're nothing but a car frame with a truck box on top. I bet they come in pink color too.

Kia and Hyundai are Korean . . . Quite a bit different than Chinese, not to dabble into politics, but the Koreans do respect intellectual property and their people have a decent standard of living. Wait, let me look out the window of my hotel, just a sec . . . Yeah, they look happy

From looking at the specs on that "truck", it is a mere toy.
Every part of it would fall short under regular use around here.
The spec don't even measure up to my 15 year old Blazer.

Yeah, almost a 5000 lb tow rating with a manual trans 4 cyl . . . and yet we consider manufacturer tow ratings as somewhat gospel

As a new car dealer I noticed that the box, tailgate, tailights, and cab metal are pure ford explorer sport track designs. Like said before, complete lack of respect for intellectual property.

Not sure if this is nation-wide, but they are being sold by the General Motors Dealership here, so I sort of got to ask the question, is Great Wall in some way associated with GM. If it is, then service and parts problems are solved.

The wife has been at me re a new vehicle and drags me around to the GM (Holden to us) dealership.....we know the sames manager.

He comes back with a price of $50k for a AWD thing called a Captiva LX, fully loaded, TDI motor.... then he tells her if she waits till end of the year they will have in the Great Wall X240. ......which I understand is also known as the Hover, for....wait for it....$26k...but it is manual 2.4 Petrol.

I have looked it up, and no, it is not the latest piece of technology, but the price is interesting.

Anyone had one, or know of anyone with one.

Do imports where you are have to pass any crash tests and get other type of certifications like the US requires?

In the 70s, toyota, datsun were rust buckets, but then so were north american cars. then came hyundai products in the 80s, rust rust rust.
do you think these new vehicles from china are going to hold up against salt and snow.

I like that it comes in a 5 speed, not very many new vehicles do.
