Pick the fiberglass cloth you want to use. 8 or 10 oz is probably good. Then based on the width of the material, (anywhere from about 40 to 50 inches wide) order enough yards to cover your project.

After you decide how much cloth you need, your supplier will be able to tell you how much resin you will need.

Re: The "Grendel": First Steps!!

i bought mine in several batches. some online (us composites) and some from a local place. mark42's advice is good, i kinda chuckled when the lady told me how far 5 gallons would go with 1.5oz mat. she knew alot more than i did, i was back pretty quick for more. you'll use alot more than you think and will probably need more than a 10% cushion as a beginner. either way, its unlikely you'll hit the correct number dead-on unless you've got some experience with it all...talking about resin here. the cloth shouldn't be too hard to calculate. judging by some of the awful abuse of the english language you can find around here sometimes though, you might not want to rely on some of our math skills!...don't sweat it, you'll be re-ordering more of something before you're done.

transom was ok?...i'll guess 20 gallons (poly) w/o the transom

Re: The "Grendel": First Steps!!

Thanks guys, I had it figured out to be about 28 yards of the 1.5 oz.mat, it's 50" wide then cover it all with 2 coats of 6oz?. I can only get it in 38" wide, so I just revamped my estimate to 60 yds. of the 6oz.

The only supplier, that i have found locally so far, the young fellow at the counter, has a face full of metal studs, and has NO idea about what I need. He had never heard of Glass/Hollow bubble, 1708, Flour. He sells Airisil and Cabosil, but can't tell me what the difference is or what it's for! He tells me he"is more into sculpting":(

No the transom has a hole from the old drive, and is showing delamination around it. As I am podding the boat, I just need to clean up the plywood around the hole, patch the hole and install a new inner and outer transom with 3/8" alum. The alum fits the contour of the transom, then you 5200 it to the transom and through bolt it with 3/8" S.S. Carriage bolts.

It was suggested to me, on another site, that I would need twice the weight of Resin as what the Cloth weighed, do I weigh the cloth, then divide that by 8.65,(weight of 1gal of water at this alt.) x2 to see how many gals. of resin are needed?
Thanks again.

Re: The "Grendel": First Steps!!

going from memory, the lady here told me 5 gal of poly per 10 yard roll of 50" wide 1.5 oz mat. once your mat is saturated properly, the cloth only needs a little more resin. does your # include covering the cloth with another layer of mat?

cabosil makes resin thicker so it doesn't run, paste-like. you can use it to round off corners so the mat or cloth don't have to make sharp bends.

bud.....just make sure that guy behind the counter can keep you in supply of resin......un waxed for lamnating.......order 5 gals at a time....bout a buck twenty a pail.

the 1708 will drink.....and drink......squgee the excess out after its fully saturated.....if you have a really big layup day....have an extra 5 gallons ready.......most shops will refund unused resin.

Re: The "Grendel": First Steps!!

Once again guys THANK_YOU'

I just returned from the only dealer I could find, Ind. Plastics, in Edmonton.
I took a diagram of what I was doing, and indeed my measurements/calculations were short!
This is in CANADA, so the prices won't be what our southern cousins are used to!

1.5oz. Mat 50" wide x 102yds (Whole Roll)= $237.60, 6oz. cloth 60" wide x 55yds @ $7.49yd.= $416.95
25gals. Poly Resin @ $139.49 a gal.= $697.45, 1.5lbs. Chopped Strand=$18.69, 2.2lbs. Cabosil=$37.82, 1.5lbs. Micro Ballons=$19.99 1ltr.Catalyst (MEKP)=$21.58
Total today $1481.59:eek:
The salesman figures I should only be back 2-3 more times!:D:D

NOTE; NO Acetone,Rollers,Trays,Mixing tools........

I never knew restorations could cost sooooo much!:D I'll have to get to my C.C. bill before the wife!:(

Re: The "Grendel": First Steps!!

Do you really need 157 yards of glass?

I thought you were doing a basic stringer/floor job?

Re: The "Grendel": First Steps!!

No, I only need 110yds., total, but it worked out cheaper to buy the whole roll of 1.5oz, then the 55yds. If you take the dimensions that I listed E.g.; the 16' stringers, one layer of mat @ 50" wide = 5.1/3 linear yds. So you need to buy 6yds.That is wrapped all away around, 13" face x 2 + 1-1/2 " for the 2 edges = 27.5", so if you take the 50" wide and lay it out the 16', trimmed to the stringer, which I would never attempt in one lay-up, you end up with a strip 22.5" wide x 16" left over, and a piece 27.5" x 22.5" (16' + the two 3/4 ends), not enough to do two 13" x 16' stringers! 2 stringers 13" x 16' WRAPPED = 12 Linear yds. The 4 other Stringers = 8yds. The decks = 21yds, Cabin lift is 3yds. and two 4x8x3/4 plywood, for extra Bulkheads and Bilge = 6yds. total = 50yds. + 10% screw up:D, That is for one coat of mat only.
then you need extra mat to attach the Stringers to the hull, it all adds up QUICK.:(
