Seems to me you have answered your own question right there..... <br />Boats and the drives that push them are made different because peoples needs are different, there is no definitive answer because what also needs to be considered is people's good or bad experiences with all or either setups, those experiences will warp your view of the boating world and no amount of mass-debation such as has gone on in this thread is gunna change anybody’s view.

I vote neither.<br /><br />Get a Yamaha SX230 jet boat (unless weeds are a really big issue where you're at). Powerful, better hole shot than either OB or I/O, decent top speed, and turns on a dime. Far less draft than either OB or I/O. No dangerous props for swimmers... huge swim platform in the back...<br /><br />Lots of advantages. Lighter to tow also... big drawback is weeds... though the new models have clean-outs that are accessible from the swim platform instead of having to get wet to clean out weeds.

It probably isn't even performance that is the deciding factor for many people. I find a rack of black paneled stereo equipment in my living room beautiful while my wife finds it hideous. I'm sure for many showing off their high tech, high hp OB motor is a source of pride (far from ugly) and there is no reason why they would want to hide it.

And I like my outboard because I can stand along side it, remove the hood in seconds and give the power head a through inspection in minutes whereas the I/O I once owned required this operation to be done on ones belly -- twice. Once on each side of the engine. Then another check of the outdrive outside the boat. It was a nice boat (Century w/351 V8) but I'm glad it belongs to someone else who is happy as a clam with it.

everyone has a preference either based on past experience or what they are looking for in a boat. they both have pros and cons and what you might consider a con really doesnt matter to me and vise versa...............

i am sure that enclosure doesnt come without a hefty price tag, seems a bit overkill if its purpose is for casting for walleye, not like its the only place in the boat you can cast, maybe they have never heard of a swim platform

After having one horrible nightmare after another with the outboard I bought last year, I'll be selling it in the spring and getting something with an inboard V8. Mixing oil is a pain, and it cost around $0.30 per gallon of gas for the oil. That adds up quick when you only get 2MPG. Also, if you have a major failure like I did, you can get a rebuilt automotive short block for cheap, and a running used one for even cheaper. Also, simple things like a distributor cap and rotor for my outboard cost $500 new. For an inboard it would be less than $20.<br /><br />That said, if I was going to get a new boat it would have a brand new FI 2 stroke outboard...because if I was buying a new boat, money for parts and oil wouldn't be much of an issue.

This just begs for more data. What engine was this disaster.
