The Krusty Krab - Seam at the waterline inside the boat?

Hi All,

Thanks again to all of you who helped me work through my boat purchase decision - previous thread on that is here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=518161&page=4

Now that I own the Krusty Krab, I've got one hull issue that needs some immediate attention. There is a seam that runs from about a foot fore of the transom (starts at the vertical structure that helps support the spashwell) up to under the dashboard. It appears to be the upper and lower inner-hull joined together (layers appear to be glass, wood, glass 2 layers, wood, glass). The seam had some patchwork repairs done to it by one of the previous owners, in the form of 1/4" aluminum flat bars bolted through to hold it together.

For now, I'm going to extend the length of the aluminum flat bars to keep her together until such time that we figure out how to fix it more officially (or, since this is a 19-60-something hull, maybe just have this be the official repair and consider replacing the hull when it no longer holds well). The reason the fix is needed soon is because the portion of the seam right at the fore end of the reinforcement is experiencing stress more than anywhere else and is deforming.

Folks had asked for better pictures on my previous thread about buying the boat, so there are both the original close-ups as well as wider-angle shots to give perspective on where the seam is on the boat.

Thanks!

Jon

Hen jon25, cannot see the attachment...

I can see it but I won't be able to in an hour. There's a glitch in the forum software. You need to click the Go Advance button when posting in order to upload pics.

I'm going to close your other longer boat shopping thread.

I don't really understand this boat's construction. I don't see a seam on the exterior that matches up with this one?

That's a neat little boat. Congrats on the purchase. It looks like a standard 3 piece glass windshield from a tri-hull or other ratted out small boat would work great to replace your bad one there. That's what I did on my last boat. Thanks for the info on the windshield - yeah the one that's on it now was fabbed up by the PO using aluminum angle and 1/2" plexi. I'm thinking I can maybe get some plexi/plastic polish and renew it. 1/2" is pretty strong so it should last me a while.

I have no idea what's up with that seam. There's another on the other side but it has a 4" verticle board attached to it so it turns it into a narrow and long storage area. I'd say it was just an internal feature, but then I'd just expect it to be wood or wood with some glass and not what appears to be clearly a seam of two layers of glassed wood. Weird, right?

jon25,

I'm not a boat expert by any means, but I think that joint just ties the top cap to an internal liner. I doesn't look like it involves the outer hull at all. The location of the cracking is not terribly surprising. Fiberglass is generally pretty flexible, and when you install a stiffener on a flexible that flexes, you'll create high stresses at the ends of the stiffener. I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable members on the board would have some good ideas on how to properly fix this joint.

fast could be onto something there. like EZ said, it does not look like you can see a joint on the outside. wonder if it was a tray or liner and thats where it was joined. i had a liner or pan for my floor instead of your typical floor.

nice ride you got....

Interesting point - the floor does seem to not be the standard plywood. It curves up from the floor to the inside wall (what's the right word for that?), so most likely that is where it is joined. That makes me feel at least a little bit better about the joint that's failing then - but also sounds like a floor replacement would be very difficult (although I'm assuming on a 55-year-old glass boat one doesn't really invest the time or money to replace the floor). I'll do some more patchwork and if she can get me through next season and part of the one after that I'll have definitely gotten my moneys-worth. I'll start the search next season for an aluminum hull starcraft without a motor or gear (seen a few of these being given away - no motor and no gear tends to make them harder to sell) and then I'll port all the goodies from the Krab over. Who knows, maybe the Krab is an old-school way overbuilt boat that will last another decade for me :) Only time will tell...

For now, she's a lot of fun on the water - really relaxing to putt putt around at 5mph to go to the local lake market and to see the changing colors of the leaves. She's really light - moves quickly and doesn't use a lot of gas. I'm a happy boater :)

:) I gotta find something local - the gas prices these days would jack up the price of that boat to way more than the asking price.

I really want of of the star chiefs, the one with the tall cabin and nice glass - would be awesome to pack some food, anchor somewhere nice, and just relax in the bright cabin and eat/stretch out. Whatever the reverse of sea-sickness is, I have it, because I feel much more calm when bobbing and rocking on the water :)
