John thanks for the link right now I can't follow through but I think that's cause they have me using the "new" photobucket. Oh and as a newly joined member of the MBS support group ....I understand. :)

Truckdrivingfool,
Welcome aboard driva hope I can continue to entertain.

The link is to an iboats thread, so it should work. If they have you on the 'new' photobucket when you access your acct, I think there is a revert to previous (original maybe) tab or link in the top upper right corner area of your acct window. I think.

More important then any of the fun & madness of the resto of boats, is keeping the Admiral on the happy end of the happily married for better or worse spectrum. I do tend to flirt w/ the low end of that scale:

But I still get to sleep in the house

in the master bedroom, with both eyes closed, usually.....

Right on all counts. The link worked, there is a go back, (ran out of play time before I could try it.), and if the admiral ain't happy...daddy is NERVOUS :)

Well it's been weird at work here lately so the only boat work I've accomplished was the sending on Red October.

(Any desire to see me do a thread on her or should I just throw some pics in here from time to time?)
The only other thing I have to report is my intense desire to have this cradle for my project.

PicsArt_1354767430271_zps22b0272f.jpg

In fairness I didn't see them pull a boat off of this but it looks the part judging by the cradled boats I've seen come through before. I think Decker's cradle might still be stronger though. :)

Does anyone know what this white primer might be?

PicsArt_1355363056123_zps1492d944.jpg

Whatever it is if I can find it's going back on there. This boat was stored upside down on the bank of the pond for my entire child hood and the bottom paint is by far the strongest left on Red. It completely clogs 100grit paper in 15 seconds of hand sanding. Once I actually get something accomplished on her I'll start an individual thread. Work on Chug A Boom is still waiting for the post holiday season though even if I did have the money right now it wouldn't make it to the boat. I stopped in the pawn shop to check on a few things for my buddy and right there on the wall was an 1897 Winchester lever action 12ga that according to the clerk has a serial number to the first year of production. I was running through a list of all the things I could pawn to get the $800 when I realised the likely hood of me getting permission to pawn the admirals jewelry was pretty slim. :sulkiness:

Well Santa made his flight and the ILA decided not to go on strike (yet) so this week I didn't feel any quilt dropping $10 on sandpaper. :joyous: Whatever that white primer is that was clogging up the 100 grit while hand sanding the D/A with some 40 grit is taking care of it.

PicsArt_1356975573866_zps3fe282f8.jpg

That's how far I got before the baby woke up and daddy's play time ended. :eek:hwell: Which as my back still hurts might not be a bad thing. Only took about 45 minutes for my hands to stop vibrating though. As an update on Chug A Boom it looks like the income tax money I was going to use for my initial resin purchase is going to household repairs so it will be that much longer on her though there is an ever growing stack of penny rolls building up in the bottom of my gun cabinet to ensure we make some progress. Happy New Year to all the Iboats crew. My resolutions are to drop 35 pounds and splash at least one of the boats. :applause:

Are you wearing an approved noxious fume respirator? :faint2: If not might want to consider it

Else enjoy the frosty libation!

Sanding is great when your running low on funds . [for me that's every day] Ya feel like ya got something done but it doesn't break the bank ! :)

Sure doesn't do much for the arms and shoulders though :)

Re: The Legend of Chug A Boom, or how a man and his tri-hull conquered the garage???

Sorry about the delay but I've been busy here lately though not with as much boat work as I could have hoped. Still I got the outside of Red sanded down (At least as good as it's gonna get.) and have begun on the inside. Since it's just sanding I didn't bother with any pix. JB I'm not using a noxious fume mask but then I haven't eaten Mexican in at least a week so... (I do need more PPE in all honesty which is one reason I'm working on Red instead of Chug-A-Boom right now.) SPhelps and Trooper I agree whole heartedly to both of your comments.

Wait until you start buying wood and fiberglass supplies, then you will see how cheap and easy sanding is. Although with ever completed step seems like I'm sanding something, I don't think it ends until the boat is back in the water.

Re: The Legend of Chug A Boom, or how a man and his tri-hull conquered the garage???

First up since this is officially Chug A Boom's thread I'll start out by relaying what little news there is on her. My over-thought windshield designs got a quick reality check last week when I pulled some measurements off my mom's Cobia. The good news is my math was just about dead on (this never happens) if my butt is about 12" off the deck the top of the windshield needs to be about 52" above the deck. :thumb: The bad news is that my mom's Cobia is much deeper than Chug so it only needs a 15" tall windshield while Chug would need a 24" tall windshield to reach that height. Aesthetically that high of a windshield just doesn't work for me so I may very well be going for style over function when we reach said point though I also keep flirting with the idea of using the pontoon boat replacement console that came in the boat as a center console. This not only shorten's the build process but also frees up some interior space. Here is my rough layout,

PicsArt_1362273543500_zpsf7d9f653.jpg

The arguments against a cc are (as I understand them),
1. Needs to be a bigger boat to make good use of a cc layout.

2. You'll have more room with a ssc.

3. You get better protection from the elements with a dc

Of these the only one to cause me any concern is #3. I do have two kids so I can see how early in the season we might want a little more shelter for them. Besides that I'm quite happy with the look of a cc layout where as a ssc just looks off to me. Thoughts anyone? Maybe someday we'll make it to the exciting parts of analytical paralysis ..... Can you say battery placement?

Coming up next an update on Red.

Re: The Legend of Chug A Boom, or how a man and his tri-hull conquered the garage???

We used to build custom CCs. I find windscreen height is up to the individual. Here is my personal thought due to what some others and myself think......not all. I like my windscreen height to be neutral. I want to be able to look over it during normal operation. And duck behind it if needed. In a CC I always carry glasses and raingear. If needed, I find it much safer by looking over the windscreen. Fingers make good windshield wipers. If you add a wiper that's different. If it is cold due to lack of clothing, we will kick back a little and enjoy the ride out of the wind.

Nice thread. Good Luck!

Re: The Legend of Chug A Boom, or how a man and his tri-hull conquered the garage???

So here we are with my little side project. I'll start this post with a few pic's since it doesn't count otherwise. First up I've got about 7/8 of the interior sanded save for the very back and detail work upfront.

PicsArt_1362269289888_zpsaedd58a4.jpg

An hour or two more and she will be as ready as I'm gonna get her. I should have finished that off tonight but it was cold and I was tired so I broke out my redneck body kit and took care of some of the more egregious problems.

PicsArt_1362269376470_zps03b11908.jpg

Thanks to GT for the idea of sawing up rubber mallets. I went to make this one a perfect fit for the "v"'s in the floor but...

PicsArt_1362269415230_zps6b0ecf01.jpg

Discovered it's real hard to see pencil lines on black rubber! No worries though as it still works just fine. I pounded these two spots back to something like flat in order to get a good surface for the patch.

PicsArt_1362269219500_zpsd6bc2c7b.jpg

The only other worrisome spot is here right under the drain tube.

PicsArt_1362269672576_zps7e92412e.jpg

That crack runs under the very misshapen drain tube. My plan is to cut out the drain tube, patch the crack from the inside, and then close off the drain hole both inside and out with another patch.
Speaking of patches I've got a few questions for y'all,

1. I intend to use aluminum from the cab fairing of an old 18 wheeler to make my patches. I intend to cut and fit them then cover them in 5200 and rivet 'em in placing a rivet every 1/2" or so staggered along each edge. Is this good? Should I add/substitute JB Weld in this equation? How much will the rivets suck up/down the metal?

2. I am going to seal the transom wood by painting it with rustoleum thinned with mineral spirits on the first coat. I can't remember what WoG said the correct ratio was for this..50/50 ???

3. As I understand it this method of transom protection is good for about a decade or so. Given this, is it REALLY worth it to get stainless steel hardware?

4. Self etching primer, using the rule of thumb that a spray can covers 10 square feet this boat would take 8 cans a coat??? That doesn't seem right, I haven't yet looked for quart prices as I don't know how much to get.

5. I've seen people wet sand with both fine sandpaper and scotch bright pads (this latter just on self etching primer) is there a preferred method among these two?

6. I believe I've seen both mineral spirits (or acetone I can't remember which) and the water/vinegar mix used to clean the hull before paint. I'm leaning towards the water/vinegar myself but again is there a preferred method and if so why?

7. I've been thinking that given the cure times for rusto it would be best to do the color coats on the boat interior first so the boat could then be flipped for painting the outside with much less worry about the paint. Any problems with this idea?

Well that's where we stand this weekend till next time, Goodnight from these two,
