'95 70hp 3 cyl Evinrude w\VRO unhooked. Dropped lower unit to change water pump. Have spent the last 3 days verbally abusing said motor for it's lack of cooperation in my endeavors to reconnect the gear shaft rod coming from the lower unit to the horizontal control bar wisely buried beneath the block in an area only accessible to single-celled species.
Sealoc provides the highly instructive guidance to put the throttle control in N and....well, that's about all they say. Apparently they left out the part about swinging the three legged black cat over my head 13 times during a full moon or whatever the @#$# I'm forgetting to do. The horizontal control bar is attached to the throttle linkage mechanism with a pin, so it is removed from the gear shaft rod by pulling the pin and pushing the horizontal bar toward the block. Apprently a pin that is at the distal end of the bar moves away from the block and disengages the shaft arm. Worked well when I removed the lower unit....not so much when trying to hook things back up. I was able to get the shaft reattached at one point but the gear shift mechanism itself wasn't synchronized with the location of the shaft, so when I started her up the prop spun as if the shifter was in F instead of N where it actually was.
The off-set in the gear shaft rod seems to go to the port side but I could be confused since the only success I've had was a depressing failure. If I raise the shaft to it's highest point (F?) then I can get the rod to mate, but then they aren't in synch and the prop spins when it should be in N. It seems like the horizontal bar has to be pushed too far to port before the retaining pin is pushed to the 'open' position, compared to how far to port the gear shaft rod can travel. I can't get the rod far enough over to port to get it into the opening on the horizontal bar...
Please help as we are running out of cats in the neighborhood.
Thanks
