....the more I don't know.....

there's some great advice and info on this site and it is serving me well.
My project is a 69 17.5 I/O trihull. New transom and stringers are in and the engine mounts are finally in too. Woohoo! might be boating by the end of August.
I was just searching the forums and a couple of topics were talking about gimbal and engine alignment to the transom hole for an I/O. I am having a hard time relating this to mine.
On mine, the engine is in the bed, then there are 2 housings bolted on, one of which goes through the transom via a rubber bellows. then the outdrive is bolted to the engine. I was reading some topics talking about the outdrive putting stress on the sides and bottom of transom and I can't see how that is as the only thing touching the transom is the rubber bellows and that only serves to keep the water out (hopefully). Seems to me that the engine bed takes all the stress of the engine weight and rotational forces.
So, i guess the question is, are there different types of I/Os? some with the outdrive attached to the transom?
