WOW

I feel for you... that place sounds horrible!

I guess I am spoiled... I for one, would never boat in something like you described! YUCK!

Hope you not only gave yourselves a good bath, but the boat too!

Re: The most aweful lake we have ever been on

We actually went to a large but shallow lake thats local to us about 3 weeks ago. Lake Koshkonong. Wife's family had a summer home there for 50 years but it was destroyed in a 2008 flood. the lake is damned on one end and a river flows thru it, flooded marsh more or less and the lake is very popular with all types of boats. So we launch at the same kind of crappy launch with trees and woods all encroached on it for $5, the mickey mouse aluminum pier is about 12" long and has no cleats  So we get underway prop trimmed up and it feels like we're draggin on the bottom, a rumble here a thunk there so I a ask a passing boater is it shallow here ? He repsonds "ultra shallow".

So we get out onto the 10'-12' deep part of the lake and have fun, toss an anchor in this one bay, jump out and have a little swim with our baby girl, ah yum knee high muck. Ah yes, the ole lake Koshkonong.

I just checked my lake Michigan super launch this morning and its back to being free, the attendants have been there on and off for the last 2 week and I launched free 2 of the 3 last times I went, will be free again today. Only launch in our county that does not have a self serve drop box. Only city "owned" launch in the county as well, the city leases the right to collect the boat launch fee's to a local yocal who also then cleans the bathrooms and runs a little concession stand. Think he gives the city about $4g's a year to control the deal, they do a nice job.
2009 boating season in the good ole Midwest the boat launch collects fees June, July and August, its free most of spring and all of fall and all of winter, GREAT.

No problems on Michigan with my little old boat, a little common sense is all I use. I would love a bigger and better boat but this boat works just fine and I don't see myself changing for a good while, a cubby would be nice for our 3 year old girl.
Fishermen, I mean FREAKS take little 16' tinny's 12-15 miles out to fish. The preferred fishing here is about 10-15 miles offshore here and the fishermen take all types of boats out there. Also right now the fish are coming into the river right now so there are a bunch of boats trolling at the mouth of the river.
I'm never more than a mile or 2 offshore myself but I'm boating to burn gas, eat and relax. Have seen plenty of kayak fishermen a mile or 2 out on the nice days, the water has been almost glass like here for the past week. The past ten days has been the warmest and nicest in a month here.
The water on Lake Michigan is crystal clear and blue green in the shallows, looks just like what I see in the Bahama and FLA advertisements.

I was on Lake Ouchita (just outside of Hot Springs, AK) the other week. Beautiful clean water, lots of islands to pull up to, great swimming and fishing, 48k acres, highly recommended.

Heh, I went to our local lake (well it's a reservoir as well) and turns out they drained a large portion (as they usually do this time of year). So it was even muddier then usual, plus it had the added benefit of a terrible stagnant pond smell. It was awful, got out to the north end and found a stranded boater with his wife and two toddlers. The first time he's had the kids on the boat this year and he breaks down...classic. Poor guy, I managed to scratch up my skeg (but didn't damage my friends prop!) trying to pull him out of the muck/goose poo! Spent over an hour towing him back to the dock and helped him load the boat. Gave him some pointers for the problems with his merc (I suspect carb or fuel pump problems) and he was super grateful, wouldn't leave without getting my address to send me a thank you 'Letter'. Be interesting to see what he sents.

But I digress...the lake was terrible and very low...so the water was super shallow in parts...they even had warnings up at the dock. Even threw my sandals in the garbage because they stunk so bad when i got home. Hope I don't get any rashes from jumping in the water...and feel sorry for the other boater as he was waiste deep in goose poo!

I think I broke my toe too...when I jumped off the back of my truck when loading...GAWD it hurts...and this funny blue color is comming out!

Beautiful day for boating though! :p

Actually I was talking about belwood. Although the reservoir in Orangeville is real bad with parasites. I pulled some sunfish last year for my aquarium (150Gallons) and had to quarentine them for damn near a month. They don't allow power boats in there either, not that it would make a difference I think...

Not to turn this into another "who has it better thread" but I think it is really interesting how people view the bodies of water that others enjoy.

Small or large inland resevoirs have their place. This one that frisco experienced sounds pretty bad. I guess people don't always realize how lucky they are on their preferred body of water. For me fresh water natural lakes are the best. They are available in abundance in my part of the world, I'm lucky.

For anyone that hasn't been on Lake Michigan or Huron or Superior. You need to if you ever have the chance. They are truly amazing. Fresh, almost drinkable, water for as far as the eye can see.

Out west in Wyoming, the majority of our bodies of water are man-made reservoirs. But I can't complain, the water is cold and clear and doesn't smell. The fishing is excellent and the boating can't be better, as you can be the only one out on the water most days of the week. Here is a picture taken last Tuesday. I feel pretty lucky to be boating in such a beautiful place. :)
