Here are a couple of photos of the newest addition to our household.

His name is Riley, he's a 7 month-old lab-mix of some sort and he decided to come home with us after we visited him at the Tampa Humane Shelter. We went there with our 7 year-old golden retriever Grady, after some basic introductions, it seemed clear the two seemed to like playing together. Riley seems to like his new home pretty well, he is housebroken, and learns quickly.

Re: The new guy

He'll be boating soon; gets his stitches out (neutered) on Friday, after that he's good to go for the water.

TD... one of the reasons we decided to go ahead and adopt another dog was because Grady (our 7 year-old Golden) had put an extra 10 lbs on. Grady still loves to play and we figured he would make a good big brother to the little guy.

We're not sure how big he will get, he's 7 months and weighs 41 lbs right now. We don't know what mix he is but his feet aren't huge. Grady is a swimmer, and right now Riley follows him everywhere so I figure getting him to swim will be easy enough. He loves riding in the car, so I would imagine the boat isn't a stretch at all.

Good looking dog.

I love it when shelter animals find new homes. Way to go.

I bet you see a whole new side of Grady once he gets used to his new friend.

Re: The new guy

My wife being from the south always had dogS. And keeping with "a happy wife is a happy life" theory since being married we have always had dogS. (all adoptees BTW. when people ask what kind of dogs we have we answer "just dogs" or as I like to call them "pot lickers")

Personally I think having 2 dogs is easier than just one. They keep each other entertained, and you dont feel so bad leaving just one home alone all day.

We had 3 dogs for some time, all good size dogs too. That I do not recommend!!! Its like the work increases exponentially. Something about that 3rd one that just throws it over the top. We were down to 1 last year which was just fine for me but in a moment of weakness I let my wife adopt a beagle. Smaller than our others which was a nice change but the bark!!!!

Gotta love that face. We've owned five adopted dogs over
the years. Our first was also named "Riley", inspired by the old TV show with William Bendix called the "Life of Riley".
We have our second adopted greyhound with us now.

It's always great when a pup finds a forever home.

We have to go dog-boating sometime now. :) We have two black middle-aged adopted shelter dogs. Chester looks supsiciously close to a flatcoat retriever, and Iris more like a lab-retriever mix. Both are about 55 lbs. I'll be teaching them to dive for Grouper.

Re: The new guy

Riley got his stitches out today and got the go ahead from the vet for swimming this weekend; we're going to try the dog beach tomorrow, then if all is well, he'll get his first boat ride on Sunday.

He and Grady are getting along pretty nicely, they like to wrestle and tug-of-war seems to be a favorite; the stuffed toys are suffering though, so it looks like more hemp rope is in order.

Re: The new guy

That's a good dog. I can tell that just by lookin' at it.
We have 4 dysfunctional dogs right now. A black lab that doesn't like water, and won't spend much time outside. And refuses to do something that she doesn't have a desire to do.
A 40 pound dachshund, that exercises quite a bit, but is still 40 pounds.
A 10 pound miniature dachshund that truly hates anyone aside from us, and our dogs. Every time the doorbell rings, she is at the door, waiting for it to open, growling and barking, and if she can make it out before we lock her up, she will tear someone up (we thought we were gonna get sued by the post office:eek:) We also like to borrow a dog, and every time that one comes over, she is going at its neck. Recently though, we have punished her so badly, that she won't do that, as she despises flying through the air, and landing on the bed.
We also have a 15 pound skipperky. These lil' things look exactly like a scaled down German shephard. Most playful, and friendly dog you will ever meet. Has the energy level at, or above a Jack Russel.
We also borrow a friend yeller lab. That is one of the few dogs we know, that actually acts like it's breed is supposed to act. She will do anything you ask, and be happy doing it, and loves swimming, running around, being outside, and exploring.
I wish our lab would stay outside, especially when we are out there. If we don't throw her ball, she is right back in the door.

Aside from the yeller dog, they are all rescued in one way or another. The big dachshund came from the pound, and the other three were found on the side of the road by somebody who was unable to keep them, so they gave them to us. I have no clue about the yeller one - for all I know, it may have been a pound dog too.

Re: The new guy

Just got home from the dog beach and this is what is left of Riley:

restinup.jpg

He went nuts with all of the other dogs running up and down the beach; he was full out the entire time. He played well with all of the dogs, but was unsure of the water. At one point, there were several dogs in the water and he went running for them and jumped right in; he was surprised and immediately swam out. He didn't seem afraid of the water and would run along the edge of the water ankle deep.

Grady, our Golden, is 100% interested in the water and retrieving balls out of it; Riley hasn't taken a huge interest in tennis balls yet, only when playing "keep away" with Grady.

He was having trouble paying attention to us with all of the distractions going on, but all in all not bad for the first trip to the beach.

Re: The new guy

Once some of this weather clears out of the area, we plan on taking him on his first boat trip. We will go to one of our favorite spots that will be a bit quieter with fewer doggie distractions so we can work on some swimming.
