Re: The old 3.0L question...

I run a 21 foot starcraft cuddy cabin, weight is about 4800lbs including trailer, fuel, fishing gear, kicker motor.
With 4 pobs it will only run about 26mph top speed at sea level. Never pulled a skier but it make a great fishing boat with the 3.0l, good on fuel. Kind of with I had the v-6, but the little 4 trolls good and does good on fuel. Does not come out of the water real fast.

Re: The old 3.0L question...

what ya should do is investigate thems new volvo penta fuel infected 150hp 3.0's. that sounds like it may be the cats meow. half respectable hp + the fuel efficiency... trailer boat magazine this month test it against a mercruier 135. the vp smoked the mercruiser. the test boat is a 19' br stingray..

edit, just looked at the write up. it was a carbed 3.0 vp vs the new fuel infected 3.0 vp. the carbed 3.0 is 135 hp. similar performance would be expected weather a 135hp merc or vp...

I've got a 20' cuddy with 3.0, weight is approx 2800#. I have trouble with more than 2 people on board attempting to tow a 170lb wakeboarder. Wish I had the bigger motor ...

Re: The old 3.0L question...

I am of two minds here. 19 feet is a lot of boat but it could also be a very lightly built 19 footer. My thought is if you are going to put the money down why not go bigger than the 4 cylinder since it's not much more in the used market. That said, I grew up with an 85 hp force ob on a Bayliner in the 80's and it did everything we asked of it including deep water salalom starts and multiple kneeboarders with 3 in the boat. Of course that boat was very light by today's standards.

OK - I've heard it a million times: If ya get a boat with a 3 liter, you'll soon wish you'd bought a boat with a bigger engine.

So if somebody on the 1,000,001 reply says it's okay that'll make you happy? :)

In that case, ignore those other million replies and threads telling you to go bigger and get the 4 cylinder! ;)

4.3 engines aren't very good? Huh? You have been misinformed...

Yeah, I think I meant to write 3.7 litre. Thery're the ones that aren't much cop, right?

Re: The old 3.0L question...

Gents,
We have a Glastron MX175 with the 3LTR VP.
With the 19" Alu prop it will pull two tubes, two wakeboards, two Knee boards and two 170 lbs skiers on singles fairly easily.
With a 17" Alu prop, we do three tubes with 6 people and it will pull two 220+ lbs slalom skiers with no problem if we split the ropes at 45 degrees each way from the boat. The skiers can be pulled with three on board.
It would be nice to have the extra power of the 4.3 but we don't need it.

I am 6' 2" 220 lbs and I am smaller than my three teenage sons (17, 210 & 6'4", 16, 200 & 6'3" and 14, 265 and 6'7") so it does do some work. We do have to watch the RPM to make sure that we don't over rev with the 17" with only two on board.
With the 19" it will do 42 MPH and with the 17" it does around 35 (GPS)

We spent four full days over new years skiing, tubing and wakeboarding and used 160 Ltrs of fuel (42 US Gallons).

We use a combination of wide Combo skis as well as old style slalom skis.

We are very happy with the boat and engine combination

That is all well and good Mackay, but the boat the original poster is asking about is a 19' boat, not a 17' boat like yours. That means it's not only longer, but wider, deeper, heavier and has a lot more wetted surface than your boat, and possibly a different hull shape. But still the same size engine.

Re: The old 3.0L question...

I agree with previous posts.

17ft-18ft 3.0 is great, 4.3 for power, speed, watersports with heavy loads.

19ft-20ft 4.3 is great, 5.0 for power, speed, watersports with heavy loads.

21ft+ 5.0 is great, 5.7 for power, speed, watersports with heavy loads.

I have a 19ft boat with a 4.3. It is great, especially with smart tabs and a 4-blade prop. I weigh 260lbs (did last summer, losing weight now!) and have skied behind the boat with 3-4 other adults on board. We have gone tubing with 5 adults and 2 kids on board, and no problems. I think a 3.0 in a 19ft boat would really struggle.

Re: The old 3.0L question...

I don't need to go 40mph, or pull 250lb skiers

I don't need to go 40mph either but my Bayliner 1950 BR (19 plus feet) will do 42 MPH. It has a 14.25 x 21 aluminum prop and is always well tuned and also in WOT range.

My daughter has a couple friends over 250 that hop in the tube. ;)

I would not trade that 3.0 for anything! Talk about a reliable engine!

You Could Prop For Different Uses, Though Most People Wont Want The Bother. I Think 2 Would Cover It
