Tell them you want to check it out in person and see what kind of response you get.

Re: The Online Outpost?

I went through this same exact senario back when I was searching for a boat. Everything checked out, website was up, they even had a A+ with BBB. After much advise from family and people on this forum and asking the seller specific questions as stated on this thread, I made the scammer, and the scammer knew it.

This is a CLASSIC online SCAM. Open up your throttle wide and get out fast!!

Re: The Online Outpost?

like everyone said it is obviously a SCAM!!

i got scammed one time by someone on another forum... they were regular posters to the forum ect.
They were selling some things off of theyre Z28 as they were upgrading to better parts (suposedly) he had something i wanted as well as a few things others wanted as well. got his name and phone number talked to him via e-mail, on the phone, and via PM through the forum. we agreed upon a price. I sent him paypal for the money... and i never got my goods. filed with paypal, paypal ruled in my favor even. but since he had removed the funds from his paypal account i didnt get jack squat and was out 250 bux for something i never received. same goes for the other people they never received anything either. and were also out money.
even tho paypal makes you conect a credit card or debit card to your account, for a refund if the money isnt there then you get screwed, but for a purchase it will go ahead and transfer it over... seems stupid if it wont refund money back as well.... espicially when they have records that the money was sent...

dont "buy" the boat dont be ignorant.

people are NOT honest in this world even soemof those that you may regularly see and converse with via a forum or other type of something.
SO that being said when you see something written like the e-mail you have received it is a no brainer that it is obviously a scam.

Good luck, hope you dont get screwed.

Hi Wayne. This is off topic, but it's my thread. ;-)
I'm guessing he has had issues with OMC, but due to the year (1994) I did some digging, with the help of Matt and Rick (sorry about that) and it looks like it's a "pre" SX drive, NOT A KING COBRA. They were mated to the Ford 460/7.5 L. Kind of a hybrid. At the very least, it's an OMC with a cone clutch. Apparently Volvo, which had just bought OMC, let them raid the patents to some extent, and they produced a drive with cone clutching. the Volvo SX single prop came out in 1994, and I'd guess they share alot of technology.
This would be a great thing, and the designation on the spark arrestor is OMCobra 7.4 GL. GL is a VOLVO designation, per Rick. So it would have been are rare bird.

I haven't gotten a reply to my email yesterday, and really don't expect to. At least it was entertaining and informative for a while....now the search continues..... Ted

looks like it's a "pre" SX drive,

A "pre" Sx is nothing more than the original Cobras. If it's actually a 94, then it's an SX, if it's a 93 or earlier then it's a Cobra, or King Cobra.
You have to understand, OMC called 3 completely different drives "King Cobra" So without some drive spec numbers you don't know what you have.
One hint, if you have an engine driven raw water pump, it's about a 99% chance that it's an SX.
If you pull that plastic cover off the drive (3 bolts shown by arrows in top of pic) and see what is shown in the lower picture below, it's an SX (VOLVO)

If you want more info on the SX, might give a visit to the IO forum.

I think you are talking about a drive on a boat that doesn't even exist-[except in the scammers mind]

I'm pretty sure the drive and boat exist(ed). Where and when, who knows. No return email as to where the boat is and why the ad was pulled. Like I wrote, I doubt I'll get an answer.

Just for giggles, I'll post a few pics of what was sent. If anything, maybe some lively debate.

Turn your head sideways for this one. Matt was sure OMC put out a cone clutch drive for a year or two. Said it had a "hump" on the upper unit if it was cone clutched.

Four Winns website confirms they had a 454 (and 351) in that boat in 1994. Everything else is a crapshoot.

Damn nice looking boat, for a ghost! Ted

Just for fun, send the text of how the ad was originally listed.

We can then find where they grabbed these pics of ebay or somewhere else. Also, we can most likely find the same scammer trying the same scam in another market.

Tbear1964..........here's a thought. Get the address where the boat is and get a local marina to do a quick inspection and evaluation. I know that when I purchased my boat in the US a local marina did this even though I was buying through a competing marina. Cost me $100 US and made my continuation of the deal a bit more unnerving.

That is not a very good analogy. They are more like a Ford Taurus, not made anymore, but parts are readily available, and there are thousands upon thousands still in service.

Can you tell me what this is: http://glmmarine.com/pdf/OMC_Catalog.pdf

sitting in the driveway of a home that is most likely vacant judging by the overgrown driveway and was done simply for a photo shoot... a crappy one at that, or if someone does live there (which they dont cause the vehicles driving on the driveway would keep most of the grass at bay, which it isnt) then they are slobs and i can only imagine what kinda shape the stringers are in.

but yes pretty boat.

i looked at a four winns that looked perfect in the pictures, had a 5.0l 302 ford small block and an OMC Cobra lower unit (lower unit was no good but priced close ish) but when i saw it in person the floor was rotten, stringers were toast and the bilge was holding water as well as under the motor in the transom. and it was i think a 94....

my 87 glastron i ended up buying is in much better shape with solid floors all original interior in good shape and a strong running mercruiser black max. i payed more and it was older but well worth it so far.
