The procedure for swapping control cable ends?

I bought a new Teleflex shift cable for my 77 Johnson 85HP. It came in, but does not have the ends on it. It's just the stainless core. I've tried twisting, pulling...etc. Nothing. How do I get my ends from my old cable onto the new one? I have a steel end on the control box side, and a plastic end on the engine side. Attached is what the new cable looks like at the end. Thanks alot.

both ends should have 2 screws into a barrel, there is a hole in the center of the barrel, you loosen the screws, pull out the old cable, and insert the new, so that the cable goes into the barrel, and tighten the screws securely, but do not overtighen as it can cut the cable.

I have an old set I was tinkering with a few days ago, and the ends on this set would not come off. The screws you show in your pic are not there. They are just flat stud looking pieces. I tried to unscrew with a pair of pliers...No luck. If this type does come apart...I would love to know how! That could have saved me a few $$$.

You got the wrong cables. It is possible your motor has a newer style control box, post 1979. If that is the case, you need the later style cables with the ends already attached.

OR, you could have the right cables now, and someone previously installed the later style cables. To use the ones you have now, you'll need to invest in a set of cable ends.

Yes, wrong cables. The picture showing the screws is wrong too, because the original stock screws are inset set screws and can only be turned with an allen wrench. See the remote control's casing guide for the correct set screw:

Re: The procedure for swapping control cable ends?

Look at the OMC J/E diagram and tell me that it does not say "set screw" 385959 or 318605 on any V4 motor in the series 1973-1977.

The casing guide in the photo may be correct, but the screws are wrong, which is what I said.

Also, I was hoping that it would help fishstick1962 to know what to look for.

teleflex may not make direct replacment for your set up,i replaced my with teleflex cables and noticed in there catalog direct replacement and universal(with no ends)those required you to buy ther adaptor end for your needs.

Re: The procedure for swapping control cable ends?

Ok, here's the latest. I took my old cable to a local marine place. The guy told me after looking at my cable that someone replaced the control box with a newer OMC box. That's why the cables were different. He sold me the correct cable with ends. I installed the cable. It was a little better, but I still could not get reverse and forward to both lock with the cable at any adjustment. So, I disconnected the cable, and started to look over the linkage and noticed alot of play in it. So, I disassembled the control linkage joint and levers and saw that the steel was pretty grooved and worn under the nylon bushings. So I cut some brass shim stock and rolled it under the bushings and pushed them onto the different shafts in the linkage after greasing them. This made a huge difference in how tight all the linkage is now. But I still cant quite get reverse and forward with the control cable in any one position. If I cant get this fixed by tomorrow, I am just going to adjust the cable favoring forward, and go to Walmart and buy a trolling motor to acheive reverse. We have company visiting all next week, and the boat will be used quite often. I checked out the control box, everything seems tight, but with the cable attached at the box, I can move the new cable at the engine side about 1/4 inch either way. Is this amount of play in a new cable normal? If so, my last question is this. Since this is not the original control box that came with the engine, is it possible that the newer box doesnt have as much travel as the original box? The reason I ask is, with the cable adjusted perfectly in the middle, I can push the lever further either way and acheive locking at the prop. Has anyone heard of this before? This is my last guess, that the cable travel range of the non-original box isnt as far as the original box. Any thoughts? Thanks.
