I find that one of the keys to being a successful mechanic is keeping your emotions in check. Well, I've been a bad mechanic. I bought a 2002 Glastron with a Volvo Penta Chevy 5.0 GL E that overheated. The people were smart enough to have it taken apart and left in pieces in the engine compartment for 3 years. I got it for a song and will be singing that song over and over again while I rehab it. My plan is to buy a long block and take the accessories from the original. I have heard that a 5.0 and 5.7 are almost interchangeable. Could I make the jump and still use the 2 barrel holley off the 5.0? Are there other pit falls I should be wary of? Thanks in advance.

Re: The Project

A lot will depend on the year of the replacement block. A Vortec head needs a vortec intake manifold. A one piece rear main seal flywheel and coupler won't inter-change with a two piece flywheel.

Just match up the year block and you should be good.

I believe the carb needs to be rejetted for the 5.7 or you'll be running real lean and buying another engine shortly. I think Bond-O has mentioned the jetting differences before.

Actually, the main jets are the same for both, the only real change is the power valve.
Have a look at this from the OEM Service manual.

Re: The Project

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. Don, Thank you for the links to all the manuals, I bought the engine one but will now return it for more money for parts. Guess it's time to do some home work. Thanks again.
