Beauty, our 31 year old mare matriarch, died sometime during last nights storms. :(

She is lying on a mud flat where I almost got my 4X4 Kubota stuck trying to get to her. She will have to lie there until the ground firms up enough to get a back hoe in there.

Of her three offspring Sugar, age 21, is now the eldest, But Mattie, age 20 seems to be in charge. Little Big Man, 18, just lets his sisters run the show.

Don't be too sad. She had a long and happy life and her time came. A horse could do a lot worse than spend her last 17 years on The Hideout.

Her tracks made a straight line to where she fell, ob. No sign of struggle. I prefer to think she was dead when she hit the ground.

That's reassuring.I don't envy you when the ground firms up.We've put down a few over the years as well as several dogs.Damn things grow on you like family.:(

Thanks, PJ. I remember when My daughter asked me to help her buy this poor mare that was penned in 1/2 acre and expected to survive by grazing. We went to get her and she was skin and bones. Walked her 2 miles to daughter's place (6 acres). That was in 1985. By the time we bought The Hideout in 1989 she had three offspring. When we moved them to The Hideout you would have thought she was a filly foal again. I think she and her young ran over every inch of this place in the first day. I am sure she loved her life here.

Wow! 30+ is old right? Isn't 20 typical? Seems like a great life for at least the last 22 years. JB and his horse, Beauty and the . . . ahh never mind :)

Having been raised on a farm, had my "favorites" for sure and had to go through this several times.
It never got easier.
Sorry about your loss JB.

Sorry to hear it JB. She had a good life though, I can tell from the way you describe her.
